Gun talk - and question

I went shooting today with both the 45 and 9mm. Ran into a little problem with the 45 auto. The small allen screw for the adjustable rear sight came loose last time I shot and I tighten it up as good as I could. Well it just gets loose again after about five or six rounds and the sight slides out of whack etc. Retighten and same thing. I mentioned this to a gun shop salesmen previously and he said to use finger nail polish to hold everything in place. This sounds a bit hokey to me but perhaps it would work. I think some lock tight would be ok. What do all think? Any ideas?

I was smoking a cigar while shooting and was plunking away at a stand of metal targets all in a row that you can knock over etc. Then I started a practice run were I shoot one handed at one target until I knock it down and if I don’t on the first shot; I start walking toward the metal stand firing as I go until I get the target down, puffing on the cigar all the while.

This is good practice in case I get into a gun battle at some casino poker room. I heard that there are some very tough and mean players at the Commerce and I want to be fully prepared for the next time I play there.

Zeno if you use Loc-Tite be careful. There are several grades with difference degrees of security. The highest grade will hold nearly as well as super glue. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

get a better sight than the factory one. or use a little teflon tape. you know the stuff you use on pipes so they dont leak. thats if the screw is one that comes out. fingernail polish is okay too. but after market sights are so much better, especially if you are going to shoot at night.

Bad news, Zeno; it's no go. The Commerce is now non-smoking. You'll have to check your cigar at the door.

I think he has novak lo-mount night sights. Hard to get much better than that. So I think the weapon is permanently broken and he should give it to me as a paperweight. /images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I am assuming a large degree of misanthropic facetiousness here, but I would be slightly careful how you practice. first, I am not Mr. Tactical, and am not advocating that you must go to the super duper high speed low drag tactical gun camp for lunatic wannabe pistolero ninjas, so don't read too much into this. But I would not practice walking toward a target thinking of a real gunfight. I would possibly practice one handed shooting, weak hand shooting, shooting and moving and taking cover and concealment. (Assuming all rules of gun safety proper training, safety goggles, helmets, legal releases, a lawyer on retainer in your jurisdiction giving you advice, etc.....)But if my first shot fails (which you must assume when using a handgun) I am not real excited about moving at a leisurely pace closer to the guy shooting at me. Remember the cop who was trained to pick up his brass when he executed a revolver reload. When he got in a real gunfight and had to reload he stopped and picked up his brass and put it carefully in his pocket. Bad idea. When I have shot w/ cops they are very insistent that you let your spent mags fall where they may - you never stop to pick one up. If one gets damaged you buy a new one. Much better plan. You don't want to get in bad habits even if it means damaging your stuff. You play like you practice. Practice only makes permanent. Perfect practice makes perfect.

As for casinos, that is a bad scenario. Too many bystanders, too much confusion, too much of everything. The only time I was ever really in danger in a casino I was unarmed. But I reacted the exact same way as if I had been armed. A guy kidnapped some casino employee at gunpoint and brought her to the casino to cash a check. She ended up getting word to somebody that the guy with her was an armed lunatic kidnapping and robbing her. Anyway, he got in a little confrontation with a security guard with guns drawn and death threats made, yada yada. No shots were fired, but I was plenty afraid. I looked for HDPW, looked for cover, and looked for an exit. I kept a lot of slot machines between us and potential gunshots. Had I been armed, I would not have drawn a weapon and would have just looked for a way out. Just as I did. Hide behind bulletproof stuff and haul ass if you can.

P.S. The poker games didn't stop. What are a few caps getting busted off in close quarters compared to making sure the house gets the drop and the people see every hand of 3-6 they can? /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Good read. It was fun to shoot in this fashion a few times though. Great post by the way (with some good advice), I enjoyed it.

This does not surprise me at all and reminds me of an incident that happen when two friends and I were playing Blackjack at the Cal-Nev Casino in Reno. This was about 3 years ago. We were upstairs at a BJ table and a bar area was nearby and a small fire (probably electrical in origin) started inside a small access hole in a retaining wall by the bar. We were the closest BJ table to the fire. We first detected the odd burning smell and then saw smoke that started to belch out and fill part of the area. The fire alarm went off. I yelled at the bartender to get a fire extinguisher. But during all this commotion we keep playing and so did everyone else. No one was really paying attention to this potential hazard. Then we started to see a few flames and then a dismal drunk poured some water down the access hole from a large cup the bartender gave him. More smoke was coming out and wafting up and gathering near the ceiling. The fire alarm was still screaming.

The blackjack dealer insisted that we needed to keep playing, that she must keep dealing until the floor people told her to stop. I was about ready to take some action in this insane situation when some security people finally arrived with a fire extinguisher and put the fire out. They did a poor job of it but managed to stop it. I had to tell the morons that they needed to put the fire extinguisher nozzle all the way into the hole and blast down and around the wall etc, and not just spray the outside. Finally things calmed down and in about 15 or 20 minutes most of the smoke was gone. Most of the people that were playing hardly paid any attention to what happened, no big deal I guess. The fire department did not show up so I assumed that the security people (they had radios etc) called them and told them not to bother or perhaps the fire station was never informed, I don’t really know.

This story may sound absurd but it is fact. By the way, we all had a wining BJ session. And the most absurd thing was that one of my friends (he doesn’t like to play even basic strategy for some odd reason) SPLIT Fives. We tried to dissuade him but he insisted. No joke. He split fives, took his hits, and then the dealer busted so he won. We laughed our Asses off over this the rest of the time we were there. OK, that's enough for now.
