i'm not a big believer in this theory, but many of my friends report tons of profits when they first jump on a server. i myself am getting an amazing run of cards on absolutepoker while whoring (then again, my opponents are idiots who like capping against me when i flop quads, which has happened on four different rounds of betting on three separate hands).

anyone believe there's any credence to this theory?

Well, I bought into stars for the bonus. Lost it all that night. Wait that was 30/60, maybe there were other factors?

I think someone should set up a website at urbanpokerlegends.com, and once for all put an end to rumours like these. Any takers?

so the site wants the new guys to win money from the loyal regular players who keep the games going and who pay the most rake?

yes - i see - the lrp's don't notice this tendency, and they keep losing to new players - but they don't really mind losing anyway because they like the software?

you might be on to a new definition of fish

I read some about this on the old scobi site. It says paradise does this, but I really have no clue.

I don't own a poker site either but the well known scobi site is either a joke or seriously ill persons paranoia manifested to the extreme.

I have frequently experienced good runs when playing at new places, both online and live. It's also happened the times I've changed my nick on a couple of sites.

I think it's probably just that the regulars haven't figured out your play and adjusted to it yet, so they give you more action in the beginning than they'll give you after they realize that you can play a little.

Do sites deal better hands to newbies? I would say almost certainly not. But, in my opinion, this would be the easiest way for a site to rig us out of a fair deal, and they have alot to gain.

I think I heard on the radio once (I'm sure it isn't 100% true), but all gambling addicts win on their first attempt. So they may continue to dump money because they think they are winning players who are now just getting bad luck.

But by the same token, I still think it would be hard. And the reason people hear about the winners is because nobody really fesses up to losing, or certainly not as often as we hear about rags to ritches stories.

I think if I was an online poker site I would want to write the program so it treated my repeat customers better as they are the ones (like me) that pay the rake on a daily basis unlike the person who wants to try it out blows fifty bucks and never comes back. Although having worked in a casino myself they love to see first time winners because they will come back over and over again trying to figure out why they don't win every time lol.

I think there is a site like this, it's Pro Poker.

I consulted the Tarot. It knows all. It said the story was crap.

However, the anecdotal evidence in favour of the theory is overwhelming. Almost as overwhelming as the anecdotal evidence proving that aliens live among us... except the ones flying overhead kidnapping rednecks on their way home from all-night drinking binges.

Check the archives here, there was what appeared to be a pretty serious discussion regarding Paradise in 2001.

For what it's worth, it happened to me at Paradise -- ran $200 up to $2300 or so, then once I was an established addict, I ran it back down. I've since decided that I'm really not a very good poker player, and I just got luckier than a tishhouse rat before reverting to normal.

ok so I bought in for $60 and ran it up to 2k in less than 2 weeks. Thought I was bobby baldwin for that time. I cashout 1k and proceed to loose that down to my last $8. I then play the .50/$1 and build it up to $22. Win the tourney and then play the 5/10 win at that slowing move up and winning a bunch of SNG along the way. in a couple of weeks I went from $8 to 1200. Sadly I loose it all in one session at the 20/40 in only 3 hrs. Went into 2 large pots AA vs KK only to have the underdog hit the 2 outer both times and AK loosing to AQ on a straight all within 1 round. after that when I had the best hand I got tentative and always thought somebody hit their kicker or when a scary board came I feared it. Bought in $500 and ran that up to $2200. Cashed out and then went on a freefall. Lost it all. Took my remaining $500 and ran from that place. Only time I returned was when they had a 25% bonus. Won $1200+100 bonus in less than a week then lost $700 real quick. But that was the best thing to happend to me as I cashed out looking for a new site and found party/empire. Never will return to paradise but their SNG tourney is set up better as you get 1000 in chips and the blinds are small relative to the 800 chips you get at party.
