Tourney Payouts - Cinderella Situation

Is there a preferred method for distributing payouts to multiple players in a tournament with a firm time deadline?

assume the following:
pays top 3 (50%, 30%, 20%)
3 players remain
chip counts are 17k, 2k and 1k.

on a pure chip count basis, leader will get far more than 1st prize. how would you chop this up?

17->17/20*50%+.139*30%+.011*20%=46.9%
2->2/20*50%+.572*30%+.328*20%=28.7%
1->1/20*50%+.289*30%+.611*20%=24.4%

46.9%+28.7%+24.4%=100% check


Or you could put everyone allin on each hand and deal a few until 1,2,3 are decided.
