I've read several posts about home game rules, and one of the issues that has come up is whether to use antes instead of blinds. Some people say use antes in a home game because it's simpler. Others say that blinds ensure more action, and are thus desirable. I like using blinds even in a home game, but have met some resistance when trying to introduce them. Could someone explain why blinds cause more action in a game, so I could explain this better?

i can't fully explain this concept to you, but one thing i do know is that loose players will call raises with any hand out of the blind because they're already partway in. that alone accounts for a big amount of the extra action you're getting. remember, to them it's not pot odds, it's "i've already invested so and so much, so i have to call".

Antes favor loose players and blinds favor tight players.

Don't explain why it makes action, explain to them that it simply makes the game go faster.
Tell them it's simply that everybody takes a turn putting in the antes for everybody -- but don't try to give them technical explanations that they won't understand. Just tell them the truth; that it's the way the casinos do it BECAUSE it makes the game better and faster.

Aye. How many times a night are you one chip short on the ante and after to figure out who didn't throw in? That reason alone should be enough to want to switch to blinds.
