Two outstanding movies. Here's another (that you should enjoy if you liked those two):

You want recent movies? I saw Big (w/Tom Hanks) again, recently. Terrific and underappreciated movie.

I'm surprised that any actress would agree to play Joan of Arc given the rather unfortunate effect the role has had on many of the others who have played the role. Witness Jean Seberg, Falconetti, and Ingrid Bergman.

Not to mention how poorly the authentic Joan of Arc fared.

I hated Ghost World, but agree on Mulholland Dr. and Requiem for a Dream. Panic was a push for me. Great acting, but the love interest was not feasible IMO, which soured it and the ending is very trite.

The main actor in DD is also in "The Good Girl" with Jennifer Aniston, which I also thought was excellent.

Out of Sight (J.Lo proves she really can act)
Almost Famous
The Quiet American
Ghost Dog: the Way of the Samurai (2nd coolest movie ever)

not really "recent", but John Sayles' Lone Star, from 1992 or so, is my favorite movie of all time.

Femme Fatale
Roger Dodger (not a 'classic' type movie... but enormously entertaining)
Equilibrium
Rabbit Proof Fence
Nine Queens (argentinian movie.. if you love crime capers, you HAVE to see this. Trust me.)
13 Conversations About One Thing

KJs is also right about "Good Girl".
Check out "The Good Thief", "Igby Goes Down", "Birthday Girl" , "Comedian", "Scotland P.A.", and the magnificient "Nine Queens" for some more underappreciated movies from 02 and 03.

I forgot to mention Rodger Dodger and Rabbit Proof (and many others I'm sure) in my earlier post. You're right, they're very good. I was lukewarm on 13 conversations, haven't seen Equilibrium. Nine Queens, of course, is fantastic.
