View Full Version : Is it possible to win in the blinds?
Small stakes online holdem, $1/2 and $2/4, mainly at Partypoker and mainly full tables.
Looking at my stats (10k hands in PokerTracker) I see, to no surprise, that the blinds are the only positions that I am not an overall winner in, which leads to the following thought:
Is it possible to be an overall winner in the blind positions, or should I at best hope to minimize the losses?

No.. you can't win in the blinds. That's like asking, "can I play every hand and win?"

Most players loose money overall in the blinds. If somebody doesn't it would only be in the small blind and I highly doubt it. My first 5000 hands or so I was actually to the positive in the SB, but as I stepped up and the games became tougher that went away.
The latest version of Pokertracker shows your winnings from the blinds by taking out the forced bet aspect. It's a little overinflated but it gives you some idea of how you play.

I noticed an anomaly in my poker tracker where I am a winner in the SB and BB, this is probably just a short term deal, I don't think I have enough hands to qualify as being long term. I play 0.5/1
In SB 194 times I'm +$32.50
In BB 210 times I'm +$7.00
As a contrast in 195 times on the button I'm only +$1.25

Yeah thats an extremely small sample size. Over the long term that'll change.

I don't want to nitpick over this - wait a minute, I do want to nitpick. You can't win every hand in the blinds, but if your win big enough pots it is possible (but not plausible) to win in the blinds. Imagene a table where everybody calls preflop and you are the superior postflop player!
