is there any free program that helps you keep track of your most basic session stats?
or does someone know of an easy way to do this on paper?

Ok, for what it's worth, I'm a new player.
I wanted to keep track of everything, so I use the basic notation on graph paper. Working my way from left to right.
My draw....flop...turn....river
under each, i note the bets, underlining mine...adding a "c" if called a "r" if raised.
I have check marks at the number of players at the end of each session.
and at the far left, I have the winning hand...be it mine or someone elses.
I do this for all hands played. And yes, since I'm new, I've had that damn Party Poker beeper go off more then once....

Pokertracker is the way to go. Best money I invested behind only a series of 2+2 books I happen to own.

A good place to find pokerstuff is:
http://www.pokerportal.co.uk/
Go down to: "Poker analyse/Evaluate software"
You will find different once for free. I used Aceanalysis for a while, it is ok, if not great.
