View Full Version : McDonalds' made me do it

First cigarettes.

Then guns.

Now fast food.

You know what's next: "I had to lay it all on black. The casino made me do it. It was so easy and convenient. They made it a fun and enticing atmosphere. I had no choice."

We should change our motto from "e pluribus unim" to "it's never your fault".

You can take this a step further.

When people become upset because of what someone else SAID, they generally don't think it's their fault either. However (except perhaps in the very worst cases) it is their CHOICE to allow themselves to become upset.

We need to teach kids in schools more about taking responsibility (to some degree) for their own emotional reactions. Maybe then in 30 years or so we wouldn't have so many nitwits running around claiming to be "offended" about every little thing.

and worse yet, they aren't merely claiming to be

"offended" about all these little things, but frequently they are demanding that others do something about it--and worse still, often getting their way..

When I was a grad student at Berkeley in 1999 I would argue with my liberal friends about the stupidity of the tobacco litigation. I said if they were going to sue Philip Morris they might as well get McDonald's as well cuz the fast food joints are just as bad, if not worse, than the tobacco companies. All my friends laughed at me of course (as well they should but not for this reason) and told me to get serious.

lots of similarities but one mighty important distinction: the tobacco companies knowingly used an extremely addictive drug in their harmful products. Now if the fast food chains were found to be doing something similar...;-)

define "addictive"

but what about when the big company lies to the people and says their product is not harmful when they know it is. why shouldnt they be liable for it.

and what about the famous hamburger chain that used beef fat in their french fries and said they were vegetarian, or something like that.

what about the casino that says they return 98% on their slots and you find out later they lied about that.

still suing the fast food companies is silly. but what about them showing on tv, this big juicy burger and when you go there you get a thin piece of crap.

they deep-fry the battered fish filets in beef-fat too, and they add fat to the processed chicken breast.

bastards that's all I can say.

its funny but if you look into artificial food additives (like aspartame maybe) then maybe some kind of case could be made. heh.

maybe same for trans fatty acids (as something never before consumed, and not tested before introduction, and shown to be harmful.)

actually I read that aspartame is simply the combination of two naturally-occurring amino acids

07-30-2002, 09:12 PM
i cant argue the point because i dont know anything about it but it did require fda approval so that should tell you something. (also that phen********* something warning right on the label, at least for those processed foods that disclose aspartame content.)

p.s. note ive eaten pizza for like 4 of last 7 days

thats fine with me as long as they tell you. but when they dont they are doing something misleading and maybe illegal, and certainly imho immoral.

07-30-2002, 09:36 PM
They tell you if you bother to "read the fine print" (for lack of a better phrase).

the above info. is actually a bit dated, but since the stuff tastes the same I am assuming they haven't changed things vey much.

I remember when Burger King first came out with the BK broiler. I loved it, and I was on a successful fitness program at the time and it absolutle was just about perfect with no sauce--healthy, fast, good protein, low calorie, and eveb lettuce and tomato. Maybe six months or a year later they changed it. The much-touted new BK broiler was thicker, juicier and had more calories. I checked the spec sheets and found the reason was that they had added a considerable amount of chicken fat to the processed chicken. Plus they raised the price since it was now thicker and juicier. Well it was good while it lasted...;-)
