View Full Version : Earnings per hr and rake

I play mainly 5/10 and where I play the rake is quite high (10% up to $5). From what I've read on this 2+2, it is generally agreed that a good or very good poker player earns 1-2 BB per hour. I know that in most casinos the rake for 5/10 is usually 4$ max....or even $3 max and sometimes only 5% rake. That can mean anywhere from $1/hr to even $3 per hr in my earning power. Am I justified in adding .2-.3BB/hr to my earning power or am I overlooking something?

If it makes you feel better, you can tell people you make 50 BB/hr. But, the reality is that the money is still going in Jaws' mouth and isn't part of you win rate.

Well, the number of dollars per hour may be the bottom line for someone who plays to earn a living but I only play once or twice a week for fun and am much more interested in how well I play than how much I earn. I would feel better earning $20/hr playing 5/10 than winning $20/hr playing 15/30.

What you suggest would artificially be boosting your "score". It's a way of tricking yourself into thinking your results are better than they actually are.

I think the problem is that you seem to want to compare yourself to people playing in different games. I think it's safe to say if you make 1.5 BB's in a game with a high rake, and all other factors being even if the rake was dropped you could probably make 1.7 BB's. But if the best player in the game leaves and is replaced with a fish, your expected win rate goes up too.

There are so many factors that affect your win rate. Just because someone makes 1.7 Bb's per hour in a Vegas game, you can't say you're a better player because you make 1.7 in your game. So I would just concentrate on improving your win rate in the game you usually play.

Game selection is a skill that contributes to your win rate. If the game you choose has a high rake, then your win rate goes down. Don't try and negotiate your win rate up by ignoring the rake.

The next thing you know you'll be walking away from a losing session thinking "If that fish had folded like he should have he would never have caught that lucky flush, and I would've won this session. I should figure my hourly rate as if I had won that pot."

It's a slippery slope. Take the numbers exactly for what they are. Sometimes cold hard numbers are the only things that can shine light on our misconceptions.

I'm confused. If you don't care about the number of dollars per hour, why did you ask the original question about how to calculate it?

>>I would feel better earning $20/hr playing 5/10 than winning $20/hr playing 15/30.

So would anybody else. The same profit with lower fluctuations is good.

I would feel better earning $20/hr playing 5/10 than winning $20/hr playing 15/30.
