I posted this hand in the zoo and someone commented
on my flop call - what are your thoughts ?

Party $0.50/1.00

Im dealt 5 /images/graemlins/diamond.gif 3 /images/graemlins/spade.gif in the BB with 7 callers to
me (1 MP and the SB folded) - I check.

Flop: 9 /images/graemlins/club.gif 5 /images/graemlins/heart.gif 8 /images/graemlins/spade.gif
I check, UTG Bets, 6 callers - lots o' bets in the pot.
I call (how often do you get 14-1 of the flop ?)

Someone thought I should fold here - I don't think
it's even close - thoughts ?.

Turn 5 /images/graemlins/club.gif /images/graemlins/smile.gif
I check (as I laugh my ass off)
3 checks, MP Bets, 4 calls, I raise.
UTG calls, EP fold, all other call.

7!!!! see the RIVER - 4 /images/graemlins/heart.gif

I bet turn, turn bettor call, all others fold.

I drag the pot ($23.25 - when was the last 23 big bet pot
you saw?)

Should I have gone for the check raise on the river - lol ????

Easy call. You'll have 5 clean outs the majority of the time, 14-1 is more than enough overlay.

Someone thought I should fold here - I don't think it's even close - thoughts?

On the flop, you have the following things working for you:

-- You're getting 14:1 and are 8.4:1 against making two-pair or trips on the turn
-- Your call closes the action
-- The board is rainbow
-- A 3 on the turn will not complete a straight

You have the following things working against you:

-- Someone could have flopped a straight with 76s, which means you are drawing very thin
-- Someone could have a bigger two-pair with 98s, which means that a 3 is no good
-- Someone could have A5s, which means you are drawing very thin
-- Even if you improve on the turn, someone could draw out on you on the river if a 6 or 7 comes

That being said, I think the overlay you are greating is large enough that you should call.

I always feel foolish when Homer says the same thing as I did, but says it much, much better.

Nice hand, and nicely done!
I think you only need about 8.5:1 odds in the pot to draw to two pair or trips by the turn (assuming the board isn't too scary).

Your call closes the action. Hitting your kicker isn't going to help anybody else (such as THEIR kicker or making a straight). You are getting 14:1 for your 8:1 draw. You are a clear favorite if you hit, even bottom two pair. Loose table and you expect lots of pay offs.

Anybody who doesn't want to make that call shouldn't be playing for keeps.

This is a COMPLETELY different situation than if you had T5 and the SB bet. Then you have a no-brainer fold.

Thanks all - every once in a while you just ask yourself if
your missing something. Good to get some affirmation.

BTW, anyone try for a checkraise on the river ?

Easy flop call.

I think check-raising the turn is the right play. On a paired-raggy board like this, sometimes it will be checked through, so waiting till the river may just lose a bet.

Nicely done, Homer, what could anyone add to this.
