I'm at the Hustler casino in Gardena, CA in a super for the $2550 main event. There are approximately 40 players who each plunk down $80 for 300 in chips. Not a whole lot of play because the blinds start at 5/15 and increase at 20 min. intervals, however there are rebuys for the first 3 blind levels (all rebuys and add-ons are $70/300 chips).
During the second round (blinds at 10/25), I limp under the gun with AKo with a stack of 255 in chips. In this kind of a small structure mini-tourny I'll often do this with AKs/o, AQs, QQ, and JJ (as well as the standard AA & KK) because they play so fast that it is likely that someone will raise behind me with a much weaker hand (AJ, A10s, med pocket pairs and so forth).
Anyway, there are two folders, and sure enough the next player (who seemed slightly liberal with his preflop raises - we'll call MP) raises to 150 having a stack of about 400. Some more fold and the button (who appeared fairly solid) re-raises making it 350 total holding a pretty deep stack of about 1000 in chips.
Of course I move in my remaining 230 chips. The original raiser just calls keeping his remaining 50 to see the flop.
The flop: 10 high rainbow
MP throws in his last 50, Button calls.
MP turns over 88's, Button has KK's.
Blank turn, blank river - REBUY!!
Anyway, my buddy Noah is sittin' next to me (a fairly solid no-limit tourney player) and says to me when I show my splendid ace high "You know after the re-raise is an excellent time to throw that hand away.".
I thought about it for a while and realized I didn't quite agree with him here.
Because these super's play so fast I figure it's possible to be up against two weaker hands. It's also very possible to be agains a weaker ace and a pair queens or below, which isn't so bad because I have one hand dominated and the other is not a very big favorite (no longer a coin toss since one of my aces is already in play). And on rare occasion am I up against one dog and one monster (KK/AA). Given that I was gonna get 535 for my remaining 230 I figure it was a good spot to gamble.
What do you'all think?? Should've laid it down?
