View Full Version : i actually did snap this time (posting for you swede...long)

i was driving (isn't this how it always starts?) on a suburban two lane street in the left lane with a black truck next to me in the right lane, i look in my rear view mirror and there is an entirely too loud white camaro that is maybe a half a foot from my rear.

i look down thinking that maybe i need to step on the gas? i am going 54 in a 40 mph zone, now i am not the type that pumps the brakes to get tailgaters away and the real problem is that he is pissed b/c the black truck is going the same speed as me so he is blocked in and can't get around us. well instead of going 60 mph to please this guy so he can meander between us i decide to just stay course and resume speed.

now this guy is really close to me, so close that when he decides to whip his car into the right lane and try his luck over there that he actually clips my car. its subtle, but i feel my car bump forward. now i am not a nit and am pretty cool about these type of things especially since i drive a large SUV and i seriously doubt that it did any damage to my car being that his car probably hit slightly underneath the bumper (i know this b/c i have been hit from behind 3 times by sports cars).

well the truck turns right and the camaro floors it and i am left wondering if he realizes he hit me?

i take off after him and he is sitting at a red light 3 cars back in the right lane and the left lane is empty in front of me but i still stop even with him. i roll down my window and tell him to pull over. he ignores. i tell him to pull over and honk. he then makes a cup with his hand over his ears and mouths, "i can't hear you" (well played i have to admit). he then starts smile and tell me to [censored] off etc, really just acting like a prick.

i have a baseball in each of two cupholders in my car (so that they don't roll around), i grab one and throw the ball at his window as hard as i can...if the window weren't rolled up it would have hit him between the eyes. it scares the [censored] out of him and he freaks out. i say, "get out of your [censored] car you piece of [censored]." (this was an easy throw for me since i am left-handed BTW)

he doesn't flip out instead he stops all his gestures and kind of goes silent and looks forward. i take the other ball and again throw it at his window, his window shakes and he jumps in his seat a little...i laugh a little inside. a black guy in a truck behind him i notice has his jaw dropped.

at this point i just start yelling at him but i don't remember what i said, probably that i was going to kill him or something but it happened so fast that honestly can't remember what i said. the whole time he just stared to the front of his car saucer-eyed (quite different from the cocky [censored] talking from the beginning). then the light turned green and he drove off and stuck his middle finger out of the window.

i put my flashers on and got out and picked up my two baseballs (they are major league baseballs and i wasn't leaving without them).

then to calm down i went to best buy to spend my $50 gift card and bought:

i actually got a lot on it considering i was in the sitting position and his window was even cracked a little bit which is the reason it rattled when it hit which makes me think that it would be really tough to break a window by throwing a baseball from car to car from sitting in a driver's seat.

the problem is you cant reach all the way back to throw the ball or your hand hits your window, you lose velocity b/c of this.

yeah, i can imagine your range of possible motion as being small...i guess the windows are stronger than i would have thought..i know windshields are usually pretty tough....

i think you should always keep those baseballs there and do a statistical analysis of just how hard it is to break anothers window...you know, anytime someone pisses you off of course /images/graemlins/smile.gif

One time, I was in Buckhead in Atlanta. Friday night or something and streets were pretty packed. Some sedan (Taurus or something) with a middle-aged couple stops at a light and just barely taps this blinged out SUV. I'm talking, not even a scratch or hint of paint or bump or anything, just barely tap bumpers. This was pre-Escalade days. Maybe a Navigator or something, I dunno. This huge black dude gets out of the truck, reaches in, grabs a baseball bat. Walks up to the Taurus (note, this is a completely bumper-to-bumper packed major street with tons of people on the sidewalks) and starts slamming it into the hood, I dunno, about 5 times. Then the light changes, he goes back to his car, they drive away.

Crazy!

12-30-2005, 06:32 PM
All,

If he actually breaks the window it is going to be harder to get the baseballs back. I think it was well played.

Diablo,

Kindly stop telling stories from an ambiguous perspective. Also stop pretending that you don't remember what kind of SUV you owned back then.

Think of the worst bar scene you know, then multiply it by about 1,000,000,000. That's Buckhead. I live in Atlanta and have partied there too many times. Moondogs, Peachtree Tavern, CJ's for those familiar. Every year it gets worse and more ridiculous. Traffic is a joke. I think if you own a car with 28 in rims or an SUV with TVs playing porn and a system playing REALLY loud music you're required to be in THE ATL on Friday/Saturday night. If you don't have three or four scantily clad sistas in your ride already, you have to bring traffic to a complete halt while you hang out your window yelling foul things at any and all females you see. Sadly, it really IS dangerous. Getting drunk and picking fights down there is a very bad idea.

I'm pretty surprised at all the back-patting you're getting on this one. This guy may or may not have committed some minor moving violations, and fled from the scene of an "accident" (with no visible damage), but your actions were well beyond a reasonable (or, I'm guessing, legal) response. You're lucky you didn't end up in jail for assault or worse or get into a conflict for which your baseballs might not have been adequate protection.

FWIW tapping on the brakes when someone's tailgating you and you can't switch lanes isn't a dick move--I always thought it was pretty standard. (Sometimes tailgaters just don't realize how close they are or that you can't switch lanes at the moment or expect you to speed up or whatever.) A quick tap on the brakes and almost all of the time they'll get the message, brake a bit, and let you pass into the other lane.

Slamming on your brakes and making the tailgater brake hard is a dick move. Throwing two baseballs in retaliation is unbelievably stupid and reckless.

first your post is legitimate and so i will respond.

i didn't tap on the breaks b/c he was so close that tapping the breaks would surely cause an accident...i mean him just switching lanes hit my car, why do you think breaking would be optimal?

out of my three choices:

increasing speed- he is in the wrong so why adhere to him and help him out? i am already speeding so why go even faster? what if i pass a cop going 60?

tap the breaks- this will cause a wreck, he is too close.

stay the course- if there is a wreck its caused by him and i will stay passive as to try and keep this situation as safe as possible.

i think this was correct IMO.

btw- bkd3clash is totally correct here. Gross overeaction.

Frankly- if he's really so close that you can't slow down, I'd just wait till the next light and go about 10 mph from there on out.

actually he hit my car. i didn't do anything until the hit & run and refusal to confront the situation which was his fault. usually i agree with you on everything dids but i couldn't really do much, i was driving on a street and the guy hit me and drove off...and i wanted to assess the situation and he didn't so i got pissed. thats basically the tl;dr version of it.

throwing something may be an overreaction but "gross" is an exaggeration IMO.

Not necessarily. Windows installed in cars are quite a bit tougher than e.g. standard house windows.

my senior year of high school i worked at a shop that installed car stereo's and it also tinted windows...a window in a home isn't even the same glass as one in a car.

you see windows breaking from foulballs at baseball games but that is different, they are coming from the sky, picking up speed at impact. i doubt anyone would be able to break a car window while sitting in a drivers seat throwing across a lane to another car.

FYI: the best way to break a car window is to take porcelein (you can find it on some engine parts) and take a hammer and crush it until its a powder. then pinch the powder till it feels "tight" in your fingers, then tap/strike that glass...it will cobwebb the glass...this is what the best car thiefs do b/c its quiet, clean and quick.
