View Full Version : Pay Day!!! (or is it?)

Today is supposed to be payday. My boss is not here, but the checks arrived from our Washington office today. They are sitting on my boss's desk as we speak. Now, yesterday, he told me he was coming in today, and it is now 2pm, and I have not seen him.

The money probably isn't a huge deal, but I would much rather that money be in my bank account, rather than be on my boss's desk. Plus, I have a bank account with Chase, and out of state checks, such as this, take a whopping 5 days to clear.

So, what should I do? Should I open the package with the check and "steal" the payment I have earned, or wait until Tuesday when everyone is back in the office (NYSE closed Monday for New Years, no one will be here)?

why not call your boss and ask you nit. No book keeper or CFO I presume either? or other company officer?

Can you call your boss and find out if it is ok to take the check out? If you don't need the money then I would probably pass on getting the check yourself. I would definitely tell someone first before taking anything. What about a secretary that could get it for you?

Call your boss. Opening the envelope would be a HUGE breach.

This is my business's payday, we gave everybody their post-dated checks last week so this wouldn't happen.

I'm in almost the same boat. My checks aren't here though. I do have the capability of writing my own check if need be, but I'm sure that would be frowned upon. If I don't see my boss by 4:00, I'm calling him. I need some party money this weekend. And I don't want to have to log into Neteller to get it.

I got my check a day early! I was SHOCKED to find a full bank account yesterday.

there is no direct deposit. I work for a smallish private equity firm in midtown Manhattan (well, the office is small, but the firm is a billion dollar firm...), and they do not offer it.

Multiple interpretations for this.

I can't call my boss, I don't know where the [censored] he is. Like I said, he was supposed to be in today. Not to mention, I don't know his home phone number, and the only e-mail I have for him is the work email, which he certainly isn't checking from home.

Trick question, burger king does direct deposit for its employees.

I call bs.

Are you really living paycheck to paycheck? If you are, then maybe you shouldn't be looking to blow money on partying. Even if you are not, the $5 in interest that you are missing out on isn't worth pissing off your boss.

When did I ever say I was going to blow it on partying? I mean, I'll probably go out for New Year's, but I'm not going to be running up a $300 or $3000 bar tab.

Unless she's a 10.

Ok, I just checked the voting, and it was 15-9 in favor of me waiting. The 9 of you that think I should get it, what do you suggest I do if/when my boss asks me about it?

Or were you guys just being dicks hoping I would get in trouble? /images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Sorry, someone else in the thread mentioned something about needing partying money. Anwyay, my point stands. The interest you are losing out on is trivial. If not getting paid on time bothers you that much just say to your boss on Monday, "Hey last week you were not here on payday. In the future, what should can I do to ensure that I get paid right away?"

You are forgetting which month this is. I just blew a couple thousand bucks on Christmas presents. However, I don't want to dip into my savings account or poker bankroll.

Convince someone else in your office to go get his check and while he's in there he'll get yours as well.

Well, look who decided to show up at 3pm...

Thanks for the advice!

12-30-2005, 04:05 PM
Do you work for Cerberus?

12-30-2005, 04:11 PM
IF your boss hand't shown up, I would have suggested you take the check and distribute other people's paychecks to them just to make it seem like you're not a selfish dick. Just tell him you were trying to do him a favor. Better to ask forgiveness...but I don't know about your boss. I could have pulled that move off where I used to work, but maybe not where I work now.

Since he did show up though, hook up some direct deposit. It's not that expensive, and is much safer than printed paychecks.

Dirty,

Doing that would get you fired by a lot of bosses.
