I'm looking for non-indie stuff. I don't care if it's techno, jazz, pop, classical, metal, rap, new, old, etc. Whatever you like listening to and have been diggin' lately, just spout it off and I'll do my best to get a copy of it and I'll give it a short review.

Oh, preferably recommend albums. Don't just throw out an artist.

Currently, I lean towards the heavy metal/hard rock camp (I won't mention anything by metallica since that's obvious). The 2 best albums I bought this year

Black Label Society - Mafia
Disturbed - Ten Thousand Fists

Other albums I've purchased (some with mixed feeling) are

Megadeath - Greatest Hits
Nickelback - All the Right Reasons
Seether - Karma & Effect
Sevendust - Next
Shinedown - Us & Them
Trapt - Someone in Control

Kev,

My roomate's a huge Trapt fan so I hear her play it a lot. Nickelback, Shinedown, and Seether I've heard from various places (I recall vaguely liking the first Nickelback album) and I've been generally unimpressed. I'll look into the other things, though. Thanks!

(I actually was big into the first Disturbed album and still listen to it once in a while)

Here's one no one will mention but everyone likes:

Sublime - 40oz. to freedom.

Also try:

John Coltrane - Giant Steps
Muddy Waters - Any greatist hits album
John Lee Hooker - same
Pavement - Crooked Rain/Crooked Rain
Chemical Brothers - Dig Your Own Hole

Wow. Those were some random-ass picks.

Mac Dre: Thizzelle Washington, Ronald Dregan

Download some Creed... just 'cause.

For real though... Stuff that isnt talked about on these boards that I really really really dig (though, it seems likely that you've heard it all)

Exile in guyville - Liz Phair
I see a darkness - Bonnie 'Prince' Billy
American Water - Silver Jews
Low - Bowie
Marquee Moon - Television

Gorham swears by Bricolage - Amon Tobin.

Give Born to Run - Springsteen another listen... it might be as good as an album gets.

Also, FWIW, I should finish 1.5 GB torrent of NMH stuff tomrrow or the next day. In addition to all the studio stuff, it includes some rare tracks, rare demos, 2 sets of unreleased demos and maybe 15 concerts (all (or almost all) from the post ITAOTS era). If any one is interested, I could put it up somewhere.

uw_madtown

Hmm, let's see if I can dig up some rec's that haven't come up much in the music threads around here...

Hip Hop / Rap
---
A Tribe Called Quest - People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm and The Low End Theory
Atmosphere - The Lucy Ford EPs, God Loves Ugly and You Can't Imagine How Much Fun We're Having
Dr. Dre - The Chronic and 2001
Jay-Z - pretty much every album
NWA - Straight Outta Compton

Stuff Indie Peoples Like But I Don't See Mentioned Much
---
Beta Band - The 3 EPs and Hot Shots II
Cake - pretty much every album
Daft Punk - Discovery
Neko Case - Blacklisted
Pavement - Slanted & Enchanted and Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain

Guilty Pop / Rock Pleasures Of Mine
---
Fastball - All the Pain Money Can Buy
Jack Johnson - Brushfire Fairytales and In Between Dreams
Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory (yes, I like this album.)
Lit - A Place in the Sun
Something Corporate - Leaving Through the Window
Jack's Mannequin - Everything in Transit (piano-pop solo project of SC's lead singer, with Tommy Lee on drums)

And a couple albums I've been name-dropping in threads but haven't seen pop up in many other's lists/posts:

Oranger - New Comes and Goes
Junior Senior - D-D-Don't Stop the Beat and Hey Hey My My Yo Yo

And I'll tack on some general love for Rage Against the Machine, Reel Big Fish, Incubus, Red Hot Chili Peppers, No Doubt, Matchbox 20 and Third Eye Blind.

Now that my indie cred is shattered, I'll go in crawl into a corner and listen to some Neutral Milk Hotel so I feel clean again.

you'd be surprised how hard it is to find some popular stuff for previewing purposes. I managed to get ahold of the disturbed album and it's pretty decent and catchy. it'd be better if it wasn't so cliche nu metal, but I like it.

[/ QUOTE ]

their lead (dramain? or somethin) is an amazing talent. ego problem, but whatever. I really need to see the next show when they come through.

if you like melodic stuff, though, the in flames recs are good, though even earlier than jester's would be good. Nevermore, Opeth and the like are good picks. daveymyck needs to pop in and school me on some more obscure recs than this though, he's my source on this stuff. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

In the rap/hip-hop genre, I'll throw out:

A Tribe Called Quest - Midnight Marauders or Low End Theory
Little Brother - The Menstral Show
GZA - Liquid Swords
Mobb Deep - The Infamous
Cormega - The Testament
Nas - Illmatic
Jay-Z - Reasonable Doubt
Outkast - ATLiens or Aquimeni
The Roots - Illadelph Halflife or Do You Want More or Things Fall Apart
The Streets - Original Pirate Material or A Grand Don't Come for Free (this is a weird British(?) rap group. both their albums are really hit or miss, but the 'hits' are really good IMO)
Sage Francis - Personal Journals (won't like it unless you're really into underground rap/hip-hop)
Common - Like Water for Chocolate

I'm looking for non-indie stuff. I don't care if it's techno, jazz, pop, classical, metal, rap, new, old, etc. Whatever you like listening to and have been diggin' lately, just spout it off and I'll do my best to get a copy of it and I'll give it a short review.

Oh, preferably recommend albums. Don't just throw out an artist.

Good stuff I've been playing lately:

Lucinda Williams:
- Cart Wheels on a Gravel Road
- World Without Tears

Emmylou Harris: Wrecking Ball

Cowboy Junkies:
- Trinity Sessions
- Caution Horses

Ned Sublette: Cowboy Rumba

Maria McKee: (self titled solo album)

Over the Rhine: Good Dog Bad Dog, The Home Recordings

Soundtrack to "Last of the Mohicans"

Keep in mind I'm 51 years old and some/many people think I'm a nit. Perhaps my opinions should be disregarded.

Also I recomend Dream Theater: Metropolis
Sit down with it and some candles (or low lighting) and read through the lyrics as you listen. Then find your own meaning to the story. I love concept albums.

Greatful Dead and or Phish, and I cant recommend Albulms just live concerts. Go Grab any Dicks Picks (the Dead) from prior to 76 or any Live Phish from 90-96
THe have them in stires, usually there 2 disk sets. If you like it you can download tons more for free.

If you really start to dig the Jam Bands you can dive into , Disco Biscuits, Moe, Govt Mule and Medski Martin and Wood as well as about 20 others I can't name but rock.

If you like trancey/trippy stuff, Try DJ Logic - Project Logic

To be honest, I just named the killers off the top of my head because I didn't have many rock groups listed. Also, you said whatever we've been listening to lately, not the best, I reccomended the albums of those artists that I've been listening to. If you want the best, that's subjective, and you should have said "I want the best." Do you think old green day sucks? I haven't listened to old weezer, but I like the stuff I've heard of them. Anyway, if you're gonna be a prick about my reccomendations, being what I've been listening to lately, I suggest go with what somebody else reccomended, Mac Dre.

Miles Davis - My Funny Valentine + Four and More. this is his second quintet kicking ass at carnegie hall. Miles said the band got in a huge fight before the show and everyone was mad as hell at each other and that's why it kicks so much ass. tony williams, then 18, also lights a fire under everyone else better than anyone on this record.

Burt Bacharach and Elvis Costello - Painted From Memory. I think these are some of the best songs ever written. this album is perfect.

Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra - Concert in the Garden. My personal favorite living composer, easily the most unique composer in jazz today.

Fred Hersch and Bill Frisell - Songs we know. Fred is a Bill Evans disciple and Frisell is Frisell. Very textural album considering it's a piano/guitar duo.

Ben Monder - Excavation. very very modern compositions for guitar, bass, drums and voice (wordless).

John Coltrane - The Olatunji Concert. this is Trane's last recording before he died, with Alice Coltrae, Rashied Ali, Jimmy Garrison and Pharoah Sanders. Extremely noisy and avant garde, but possibly some of the most searing music every recorded. Trane sounds like he is staring down death on this.

gories - anything by the gories. /images/graemlins/smile.gif early 90s garage/punk/rocknroll from deeeetroit.

falcons - i found a love (60s r&b/soul, lead by wilson pickett. great stuff)

The best CD I bought this year was released in 1999. It's from a band called Union. The band has Bruce Kulick from Kiss and John Corabi from Motley Crue. I'm not a big Kiss or Crue fan, but this cd is great. It's hard to find in my area though, but you can get it here:

Union (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00000JCDB/qid=1135971209/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/103-0810041-0626262?v=glance&s=music)

Some other good CDs I bought this year (I'm probably skipping a bunch, but I buy anywhere from 5-10 CDs a month on average.

Black Label Society - Mafia
Nickelback - All the Wrong Reasons
Disturbed - 10,000 Fists
Stevie Ray Vaughan - Essential SRV

I'm drawing a blank right now. I'm at work. I've bought some real turds this year, but these are above are pretty good. Trust me on the Union CD. If you want to sample some songs, my favorites are "Robin's Song" and "Love (I don't it anymore)".

this band is pretty indie/hipster but i can't remember anyone ever posting about them. Le Tigre, a very "different" sound, but fun to listen to when I'm getting ready to go out. Kinda feminist/political punkish/8th grade garage band energy and sound:

Balance 005 - James Holden - pixie trance master's trippy mix

Everything But the Girl - Back to Mine - DJ mix of their favorite songs - perfect mellow music.

Richard Dorfmeister - Richard Dorfmeister Presents A Different Drummer Selection ---great mellow DJ mix of reggae tunes from one of the best downtempo artists around
