View Full Version : My day with Arnold (long, pictures)

This is purely a brag post about my dad. I know its pretty personal and maybe a bit wierd to share with OOT, but I have to show these pictures off, so I'll explain the situation first.

My dad has worked for Arnold as the Chief Deputy Director of the Finance Department since he first got elected. It was a cool job, but its been his dream to have the Director position for quite a while now. He finally got the call and he got sworn in last tuesday. Being the Director of Cali's Finance Department is a pretty big deal, and its very strange to think of my father, who is rooted in the Blue Collar world, as the guy that's in charge of Cali's $. This is budget season, so he's got this huge press conference on the 10th, and I'm sure it will be surreal to see him on TV, although recently he was plastered in the LA Times, SF Chronicle and some others.

Anyways, he brought the family to his swearing in and I got a couple really cool pictures and a story that I will tell for the rest of my life. I've been lifting a lot lately and its visible. When my dad introduced me to the Governor, Arnold shook my hand, took a step back, got this wierd look on his face while looking me up and down and said, I swear to God, "wow, you're looking very pumped up!" Unreal. The [censored] Terminator told me I looked pumped up. It felt like it was a Hanz & Franz skit. My GF is going to hear this story 5000 times in the course of our lives, and it really doesn't help my already large ego.

Anyways, I finally opened up a Photobucket account. Hope these links work. I'm the taller of the two sons. And yes, that's the sword from Conan the Barbarian. My brother has a picture of the Governor holding it while handing it to me, but I haven't got that one online yet.

Oh, I think the best part of the whole thing was hearing the Governor talk about my dad for like 5 minutes. He was saying some pretty heavy stuff. Actually said that his first budget would have been a disaster without my dad and that my dad has probably been his biggest asset during his Governorship. My dad has been to my graduation from the Academy and subsequent commissioning, flew to Texas to celebrate my getting selected for jets, was there for my winging ceremony, and brought my brother to the front steps of West Point. It was unbelievable for us to be able to see this happen in his life and return his enthusiasm and pride in us. Pretty amazing stuff. Brag over. Pictures:

Congrats to your Dad, and it sounds like you had a great day!

But, please...please...please tell me you were able to walk out with the Conan sword!

Awesome. I probably love Arnold a little too much for a married 30 year old man. I would be geeking out big-time if I ever had a chance to meet him.

Also, Arnold was just like "go ahead...take the sword off the wall"? By Crom!

Yeah, Arnie is great.

I used to do lotsa weights, and the books he did were good, solid advice. And cos I was into it, I read about the other stuff he did, like have sessions with mentally and physically handicapped kids, and he'd tell of what he'd get out of it, and what they'd get out of it. I've held him in the highest esteem for 20+ years.

No, my brother asked the setup question "is that the real sword, blah blah blah." And he very quickly just picked it up out of the case its in and handed it to my brother. Here's the case its in:

In fact, here's all the pictures. My names on the account, but I guess if you really wanted you could just figure out my dad's name from the papers, so oh well:

Yeah, that quote will be told many times. My grandkid will come in and be like "yo grampa, I just benched 400, I'm so yoked." And I'll just say "you little pecker, I used to bench 400 easy, and THE TERMINATOR SAID I WAS [censored] PUMPED UP!" Lol, I'm gonna average once a day with that story for the next 4 years.

good point. I don't like the Governor's choice in shirts. Where is his cuffs? The color sits funny, someone tell the man he should be wearing spread collar shirts. His tailor should be shot.

PS for Jihad:
1) takes a lot of balls to share this with OOT, impressive. Any concern about how it might affect you father?
2) Is your father the guy that was chosen after William Buffet turned the Governor down? If so, he is a bit of a legend in Republican circles I hear.
Not that I should know about Republicans or anything, my bookkeeper listens to that AM radio right wing wacko shite and sometimes I happen to hear a bit.

That's somewhat true I guess. Basically, when all the publicity about The Tookie Monster got around, the city back there that adopted him threatened to remove his name from a stadium built in his honor. Arnold had his team of lawyers fly to Austria last month and forced the town to remove his name and likeness from all things they had of him in the city (and that was quite a few things). The city offered to revoke their threat of taking his name off the building, Arnold refused and his name is now no longer associated with the city in any way.

It is pretty cool he said this, but I get annoyed when he says this. Unless I'm wrong, this isn't actually an Arnold line. Isn't it from Hanz and Franz on SNL doing a parody of him? He's always got big lines in movies "hasta la vista baby" "you're one ugly motherf%$#@&" etc. He says these lines often as well, but I don't think pump (you) up is actually his line.

I don't believe it was supposed to be a quote, just a comment. Later on in the day he asked my dad how much I benched and weighed, he actually got both w/n 5 pounds each. He also commented about my shoulders which are way bigger than the rest of my body should allow. Those two comments led me to believe that it was just him still being naturally interested in bodybuilding and lifting. Sorry if that was confusing.

He does play the crowd on occassion. My dad has told me several times where he cut up a very serious meeting/situation with some random appropriate movie quote of his. In fact I forgot how, but Dad has heard him rip the whole Conan quote off.

Please understand when The Bible was written. It was pretty cutting edge advice in the time frame. It has provided many, MANY, professional bodybuilders with a basic frame of referrence and starting point of their knowledge of working out. Either way, I got my copy signed so its awesome. I'm awesome.

The basics in the Bible are still solid, I'm sure. And the other books I've read of his are typically cut-downs from the Bible. Maybe you've read others.

It's packed away, and I'm saying this from memory, but it runs through all the basic exercise moves still used today, instructs on warm-up and warm-down, goes through the patterns of reps/sets still used today, so what's to be awful?

What, you think solid weight-training advice is trumped by 7-minute abs and sht like that? Or you need some inspirational horse crap to get them weights moving?

Translated the Socialist party and Green party are ashamed of him.
On a recent radio show the majority of Austrians who phoned in said that although they did not support the death penalty they still supported Arnold and the fact that he was upholding a court decision.

diebitter and Jihad,

The primary issue with the book is that it recommends way too many sets and movements for the non enhanced athlete. This is of course an understandable problem because Arnold, like ALL competitive bodybuilders was far from a natural.

Outside of that problem, and especially considering the time of release, the book is phenomenal. The vast coverage and pictures make it worth buying even today.

J

diebitter
12-30-2005, 11:15 AM
Yeah, possibly, can't remember his suggested routines, so I'll concede. I'm pretty sure I used to do something like a full routine from this book though, even as beginner/intermediate level, so it wasn' THAT hard.

The actual movements described, rep/set structures (assuming 3 or possibly 4 sets, each heavier and less reps than the last), warm-up/warm-down advice is still solid though, huh?

And still make this book worthwhile (as you rightly say).

jaydub
12-30-2005, 11:51 AM
diebitter,

Absolutely, considering the time of release and the way the concepts were all put in one place, it was a great book and the advice can still be beneficial.

If you get a chance to dust off your old copy, take a look through the workouts, especially the intermediate and advanced ones.

J
