Don't have a definitive read on the villain yet, as I've only played about a dozen hands or so, but he seems pretty laggy thus far. Is my check on the flop correct? Should I have potted it on the river here, instead of checking? There's $9.30 in the pot after the villain bets on the river, so I'm getting almost 2 to 1 if I call. After playing it the way I did, do you call here?

If you represented your ace on the flop then people are much less likley to play back at you without 2 pair. You did not bet the ace so now it is pretty much a guess. Check on the flop is wrong.

I agree with others that you should've bet the flop, but as played, you have to call here.

and that's bad because...?

I don't mind checking the flop as much as some people here (although it's clearly the better option), call now.

It is bad because now hero is playing river guessing games and put himself in a tough spot.

Even worse than the check on the flop was the check on the river.

Actually, the check on the river is fine against an opponent who is likely to bet worse hands than he would call with (almost all non weak-scared opponents after this betting sequence). Assuming that you have no intention of folding, of course.
