I was trying to calculate the odds of flopping straight draws with connectors and one-gaps and my numbers seem way off.

Could someone please show me the correct way to do the calculations?

Thanks!

If you're going to do more of this type of work in the future, buy a copy of Mike Petriv's Hold 'em Odds Book. It has everything you could possibly want.

I think the easiest way is to count the number of different ways to flop an open-ender and divide this number with 19.600 which is the total number of different flops.

Connectors (T9): There are 3 different kinds of open-ended straight draws - 87x, J8x and and QJx. Let's count the number of diffrent 87x flops. There are 4 different 8's and 4 different 7's. Excluding the 8's and 7's and your two hole cards there are 42 different cards left so there are 4x4x42=672 different flops of the type 87x where x is not an 8 or a 7. If you also want to count the paired flops then we have to add the 48 combinations of (7,7,8) and (7,8,8). Obviously there are just as many combinations with J8 and QJ. Finally there are 128 combinations of Q86 and KJ7. Thus the answer is (3*(672+48)+128)/19.600.

By the way the Petriv book is pretty good. He keeps it simple and it's well written.

If its a desire for understanding you have, the Petriv book is great. If you just want answers buy Pokerstat or Holdem Analyzer (which I prefer). The extra $ will be repaid in time saved.
