Pokerstars $20 + $2 NLHE sit n go, single table, down to last 3 players

Blinds are 100/200.

I am chip leader with 5,600 chips (5,400 after posting the BB).

I am dealt pocket 8 3 suited.

UTG folds, SB calls.

SB has 3,700 chips after calling.

Flop is 5 3 8 (2 of a suit), none of the suits on the board matching the suit in my hand.

SB checks. I check.

Turn is a 2 (now there are 2 different, 2 of a suit on the board).

SB checks. I bet 300. SB raises me another 300 to 600. I decide it's possible he may have made a straight but that it's more likely he's on a flush draw. Frankly the little raise makes me suspicious but I can't see just calling in this situation.

I raise another 1,400 to 2,000. He raises me another 1,400 to 3,400. At this point he's got just 300 chips left so I move him in for the rest of his 300.

He flips over A4 (a straight) and I go from being chip leader to a short-stacked 3rd.

Should I have bet out on the flop? I wanted to trap but in this case it cost me.

On the turn, was there anything I could have done differently?

Or was this just a case of the poker gods setting me up that time, i.e. I play it right but was just destined to lose that one?

Payout structure (gross of $20 + $2 buy-in) was:

$90 for 1st, $54 for 2nd, $36 for 3rd, so to me that's an incentive to take more risk in playing to finish 1st rather than trying to slide into 2nd (does this make sense)?

Finish first and you make $54 more, finish 2nd and you make $18 more, so you really should try to finish 1st.

Yes, I would have bet the pot on the flop. The pot is T1500 and I'm thrilled to take it.

I dunno...the baby reraise and all in push after you repopped it screams at least a set or top two (both of which can beat you) - so I'd probably have tried to shove fewer chips in the center.

Still...3rd place is money...
