I read an article in the L.A. Times the other day that King Kong was very disappointing in its box office receipts.

I wasn't sure whether to be surprised by this or not, but a commercial I just saw made me realize something.

The old commercials were dull as hell. The new commercial has the chick being caught as she falls, lots more leaping about by Kong, Kong thrashing a dinosaur, etc. It almost looked like a different movie from the one they used to advertise.

Anyone else see the new commercial and wonder, What the hell were they thinking by not making it look this exciting before?

I'm sure it'll do fine at the box office -

flop is not a word I've heard used to describe this movie - not even close -

I said I thought it was a miss in the review thread. Just too predictable - and the director had plenty of time to do something more in his usual 3 hour (yawn) time frame.

The simple answer is that they were appealing to the female audience, because they could count on the male audience showing up by default. They want this to be TITANIC II, so it has to be romantic and nice to pull the ladies in. Now that the opening weekend is done, it's time to remind the boys that there's tons of sh|t getting f*cked up in this movie. By dinosaurs and killer cockroaches.

It made $50.1 million in its opening weekend and $66.2 milli
on overall (Wed-Sun). I believe that's below expectations by a good amount.

However, U.S. box office isn't as important as it used to be. Foreign box office and DVD sales are just as critical now.
