View Full Version : Anyone know this guy?

I know it's a general description, but figured I'd check in anyway because I'm curious. Was at the Trop this weekend and was playing in the pink game late night/early morning saturday. Around maybe 5am this kid jumped into the game (it'd moved to $10-20 then, not sure if that's normal). Anyway, he buys two racks of pink and just starts dumping, acts like the game isn't big enough for him. He's a younger kid, maybe 21-25 and a few of the locals are acting like he's some hot-shot, asking him about all his tournament wins and near wins lately (local wins I'm pretty sure). He's wearing pajama pants with playboy bunnies on them and what looked like a soccer warm-up. Athletic looking guy, short hair, maybe around 5'8-5'10. He starts trying to convince people to play $20-40 & $40-80 and while he's not a complete ass, he's definitely an ego-maniac looking for a game of heads up. He eventually got his short-stacked $20-$40 head up freezeout game when we got into a little friendly trash talking. Was asking the poker room manager about it later and apparently the kid plays $80-160 at the Borgata or at least that's what he'd heard? When he went to borrow his bankroll from his buddy (who was sitting next to one of my friends), the guy starts peeling off $2k like it's nothing.

Anyway, figured it's a long-shot, but thought I'd ask on here. I'm curious about this kid and if he's for real, or just some drunk frat boy who's got friends with money to burn.

I don't know the guy, so I can't say for sure if he is any good or not, but Atlantic City is full of people like this (money-to-burn types). Then again, so is pretty much every other casino town. Just because somebody plays bigger stakes or wins a couple of tourneys doesn't mean that he is any good.

how'd you do against him? I would think after play HU against him you'd know if he's for real or not? Am I missing something.

thanks,

We were both playing pretty short stacks because I didn't want to risk more than $700 against him in a game I don't normally play (I'd never played above $5-10 live until last week, although I had online). And the $$$ amount was also significantly lower than he supposedly plays, so if that's true, he didn't really care about the money, just running me over. My analysis? He didn't suck but he wasn't good enough to be running his mouth like he was.

Basically I guess I'm curious because I felt like I played pretty well in a short term sense (for me, not compared to anyone else), so I'm just trying to figure out if I just got really lucky to hit cards or if I could actually hang in a $20-40 live game (assuming that if this kid can, that I could). I know it was just one late night silly game, but hey, a guy can dream....:)

From the pajamas and slippers it sounds like Ian, a guy who plays at the Borg every day. He's alright, nothing special. But $20-$40 HU is a completely different game than a full table. You're right about the money meaning nothing to him, supposedly he's an Internet millionare, not sure abt net part but the Millionaire part is definite.

in general people who need to have their poker skills regurlarly validated by the people around them aren't as good as they think.

The human race has much in common with binary code. In order to make sense of things, we need some zeros.

Saw this same type at the gym the other day, but he had little devils on his pants. Must be a generational thing. Me and a few other guys my age had a good laugh wondering when it became okay to come to the gym and lift in your pajama's.

I don't know about this kid, but there's plenty of them around. Some real good, some just coked up. Esepcially at 5AM. Some of the kids playing the $75-150 stud games at the Taj look like they're not old enough to drink.

your not ready for 20-40, come back in 2 years.......... I work that room all the time. Later

Ok, so I suppose this means you watched me? Any particular tips then? Not that I look forward to public criticism, but I'd rather deal with it and get better as a result.

Not sure I understand the 2 years part though, unless you just think that I'm so bad that I'll never learn....If you watched me play NL though, you'd definitely think that....:(

In general I understand what you're saying, but I'm not trying to validate myself as a poker player, just trying to understand where I stand skill-wise and what live games I should be looking for since I've mostly played online (although I started off playing live rooms). I'm not a pro or even semi-pro, I just enjoy playing and want to play at at the highest limits that I'm competitive in.
