View Full Version : Profit or Fun?

By far the most profit I can consistently make is 4 tabling $3/6 for rakeback and bonus money. This is also the most stressful.

I find I'm having more fun with less stress playing SNGs or low buyin MTTs, and this what I've been mostly doing for the last few weeks. I still make money, just not nearly as much (but with very low variance compared to cash games).

Do you always play the games that maximize your income?

Or do you compromise income to play the games you find more fun and less stressful?

Nothing wrong with playing poker as a fun hobby that shows some profit, as opposed to playing poker as a stressful second job (I'm assuming that poker is not your primary source of income).

Not my main source of income, but actually pays better than my job. 2/3 of my income probably comes from poker.

You are getting LESS variance in MTT's than limit ring games?

I'll hop into an SNG or MTT to relieve boredom from playing 3-4 ring games at a time. It does help.

Also, a definition of "most profitable" could help. Some games are more short term +EV, some, more long term +EV. E.g., if you can make 2BB/100 @ 3/6, but only 1BB/100 at 5/10, then you'll make more $$ at 3/6 at first. However, gained experience at 5/10 may let you increase your WR there and subsequently be more +EV than playing 3/6 all the time.

So far, I have been treating poker as a fun hobby that actually makes me some money instead of costing it. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Yes, as I'm comparing $5 and $10 buyin freezout MTTs to $3/6 ring games.

I won't drop several hundred dollars in buyins before I finish in the money a few times and get back ahead.

But I'm certainly capable of hitting a bad streak and dropping that much multitabling ring games.

75% fun, 25% profit. I’m still in High School, and my parents are there for me financially, so Its really not a big deal right now. Making a few hundred on the side is just a bonus. For me, my priorities are ...

1. Family/Friends
2. Sports (Basketball, Bowling, Golf)
3. School (yea, 2 and 3 should be switched /images/graemlins/wink.gif)
4. Poker
