View Full Version : X-mas gifts

I am at a loss for gift ideas this year. I just need to get something for my parents, but I can't think of anything that doesn't suck (like a tie or perfume or something really boring). Post anything interesting/creative that you bought someone this year.

What did you get?
Who was it for?
Where did you get it?
How much did it cost?

The tangerine and blue tuxes from 'Dumb and Dumber'. They'll have cool outfits for fancy dress/halloween/weddings of people they don't like forever.

I like this idea because my Mom uses her cell phone w/ her earpiece a ton. However, I'm pretty sure her phone doesn't have bluetooth built in. Is there any product out there that makes bluetooth available for non-bluetooth phones? I'm thinking something like a trasmitter that plugs into the regular earpiece jack and then works with a regular bluetooth earpice. I jsut gogled for this quickly but couldn't find anything. Anyone ever see something like this?

EDIT: Found one (http://froogle.google.com/froogle?q=Jabra+FreeSpeak+Bluetooth+headset+w/+2.5mm+adapter&hl=en&hs=J1h&lr=&c2coff=1&safe=off& client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&sa=N&tab=ff&oi=froogler)

I think you can into an SD card slot. Some phones have this I think (but not many). Easier to upgrade the phone?

A year or so ago I decided that all my gifts from then on would be books. An afternoon in borders is fun (for me at least) and they are usually pretty personal and thoughtful.

Even if they aren't big reading fans you can find something to suit them.

SonicCare toothbrushes rule!
But my family has them already (or at least had them at one point and didn't like them).

Some of my people read this forum, so I can't post all my gifts here, but here are some things I got:

Toaster/egg poacher thing (available at Target and Amazon) for my mom who loves toast and poached eggs. She actually put it on her Amazon wish list /images/graemlins/smile.gif heh
Cash for a father who needs it. With sentimental card.
Earrings for my sister.

Handmade goods are always good gifts. If you have a bit of craft in you or a crafty friend, go that route. Warning - takes time. If I had my act together sooner, I would have been giving out crafts this year. Alas...

I personally love subscription gifts. Magazines are cool, satellite radio is awesome, netflix is good (but you should go for a full year).

Gifts I received that I loved:
National parks pass
digital camera
iPod
concert tickets
and sentimental things

FWIW I would much rather receive cash than any purchased gift. I feel like most gifts received (unless specifically asked for) tend to suck or I could have bargin-shopped for a better deal on the net.

There's nothing worse than putting on that happy face on the outside when unwrapping a sucky gift. Talk about a true p*ker face.

Last year I gave handcarved wooden items.

Christmas ornaments, a recipe box, a jewlery box, a crib board, and a serving tray. I just bought them premade and carved them then put a finish on it.

This year I was trying to make small wooden boxes using only hand tools. I had planned to put funny things in them like a yoyo or a finger trap. But the boxes have not come out very nice so it will have to wait for next year or a birthday.

So I just bought some stuff this year. /images/graemlins/frown.gif

I'm still going to include the silly stuff though we are all big kids people love toys as do I. /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Tony, this doesn't change my point above. I agree with you about being thankful, but when someone is asking you if you like the gift and is trying to please you by giving it, sometimes you have to put on the 'happy face' even if the gift sucks.

Being thankful and faking pleasure from the gift are not mutually exclusive.

Little sis: New cellie she's wants.
Big sis: New luggage set she needs.

Friends: New jeans and table tennis paddles for roomie, prob 2nd monitor as well; nice 12 piece stemware and wine club membership for Trav; this Northface vest Becka's been drooling over online, almost impossible to find in her size and colour; gift card for Gene Juarez for Christine for some hair foil thingie she's been wanting to do for a while now; and me and Seth and putting together stockings for everybody else with personalized stuff, inside joke items, etc.

I am so pumped for Christmas.

I went to the porn store got a cockring for my BF. I also got him boob pasta and cum-shot cards to play p*ker with.

Everyone else is getting whiskey or jager, depending on their tastes.

I picked the WRONG months to live with you.

BTW, using specific names of friends that no one knows is sort of weird.

I got my parents a steak/other good food stuff of the month subscription. It's not exactly what you're asking for, but it's similar. There's a link to it in one of my posts above.

Dude, I got you jeans. And expensive dinners. And kind of a new monitor in the sense that I caused you to mutilate your old one.
