Many years ago, I did some research into this area, enough to learn that it is a very complicated field with different types of rugs made of different materials all over Asia. There are antique rugs and new rugs and used rugs. I am no expert, but what I did learn was that the clueless novice can get taken for a very expensive ride. I would recommend doing some serious research before venturing into this market in any big way. People I know have done well by doing their homework and then going to Turkey on holiday (an affordable vacation spot which everyone I know who has been there has enjoyed) and buying rugs at a good price and importing them into the US themselves (the key being doing the homework).

I am far from knowledgable but I have a buddy who is a connosieur (apprently chicks like to bang on oriental carpets). Here are your main questions?

Do you know the material (Wool, silk, ?)
How many points?
What size are they?
Where is it from?

Appraising is the wat to go - make sure you get one with references - there are many shady people in this business

I know a bit. The most important things are:
If it's not from Iran, it's worthless.
They are expensive.
Take good care of them.
You really need someone who knows what they are to take a look for you.
