In general, you can't make 'diet' spirits because the source of most of the calories are in the alcohol itself. Go into the store and look for 'light vodka'. You'll see that the way they've removed the calories is by limiting the alcohol content (usually down to %20 from %40). Also, a shot of whiskey has about the same amount of calories as a light beer, or a shot of gin or vodka. And contrary to the cited article contains very little added sugar.
