View Full Version : The strangest hand of poker I've ever played...

I'm playing in a very soft 2/5 NL game. At least two superdonks involved, with straddles common and restraddles not uncommon. Swolfe was playing with me, and was running over the table. However, Lady Variance had chosen to teach me a lesson in humility this evening, so I was down to my last 200 when the following hand came up:

SuperLAG straddles UTG to 20. I look down to see AJo in MP. I raise to 60. Everyone folds except SuperLAG.

Flop: 10 /images/graemlins/club.gif 6 /images/graemlins/spade.gif2 /images/graemlins/club.gif.

SuperLAG immediately says, "I put you all in." I go into the tank.

Here's where it got strange...

SuperLAG, whose name is Joel and who seems to be really nice, and has about 1500 dollars in front of him, says to me,

"Listen...if you show me what you have, I'll tell you if you should call."

For whatever reason(and flame away for this), I believed him. He then says, "You should call."

Then he says, "Here, let me show you." AND ROLLS OVER HIS CARDS!!!!! He has KQo...so I am indeed ahead. With a very confused look on my face, I call, and MHIG.

I gotta be honest, I have never seen someone do this before...it's not like I'm major friends with this guy. I had been sucked out on all night, and was slightly steaming...but this hand rattled me worse than any of the bad beats combined.

I cashed out three hands later...partly because I doubled up and was back to even for the session, but honestly, it's mostly because I'm just totally out of sorts. I can't stop hearing the voice in my head going, "WTF was THAT????!!!!!"

I really wanted to post something witty and sarcastic about how ridiculous this whole situation is, but I'm completely dumbfounded.

He's setting you up so next time he does this and shows you a better hand than yours, you'll call and be pwnt.

He thought he would suck out but his pattern mapper was broken

Possibility 1.) He was being magnanimous.

Possibility 2.) He was hoping you would do the opposite of what he said.

Either way, it's a great story. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I think he meant to say his hand held up until the river.

That's ridiculous. He was up at least 1500 dollars while I was there.

MHIG = My Hand Is Good = Other guy didn't suck out

That is frunked. Here is one from my experience. I was playing at a table where a guy literally toked half his pot to the dealer. This was like a $100 pot. Then he bought in again, and he won a big pot 2 hands later, and he toked almost that entire pot! He was a big fish, but when he won he just donated another way.

I had something happen like this once. There was no exchange of card info or anything like that, but this kid was there just for fun with a big bankroll, playing anything just to have a good time. I ended up with the nuts (or second nuts) or something, and he pushes all in so I can double up off him. I forget if he had high card or bottom pair or what, but it was awesome.

Truth is sometimes stranger than fiction. If you put that in a movie, people would probably dislike it because it was too unreal.

Simple explanation:

The guy is a gambler who was simply playing for the thrill of drawing.
