View Full Version : Using a VGA monitor with a DVI video card?

Ugh. I'm having problems. I built my computer about 3 weeks ago and I used this video card (http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16814121193). I already had 2 19" CRTs, but I had only been using one. I had planned on using both once I got the new computer built. I thought the video card came with the adapter, but it didn't. I placed an order for this adapter (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16814999201) Monday, and it showed up today. I opened the box and realized that there are more pins on the adapter than I had seen in the pics on the Newegg website. Specifically, there are 4 pins surrounding the ~3/16" long flat pin. My video card doesn't have 4 holes there. I couldn't find anything in the newegg description or the documentation that came with my video card that indicated that it was anything other than normal DVI, but this adapter isn't going to fit, so I just wasted $7.50, it appears.

How do I connect my second monitor? Is it just a matter of finding the correct adapter? If so, where can I get one?

newegg should be able to exchange it for the right one.

The more I look, the more it appears that there isn't a "right one." I think it might be DVI-D, and I think all of the ones that Newegg has specifically say they don't work with DVI-D. I hope I'm wrong, but it looks like I might have to get another video card, even though I thought I was buying one that would be capable of running two CRTs. Please tell me I'm wrong /images/graemlins/frown.gif

Try your local Radio Shack. They have adapters for most everything.

I tried there. Both of them (2 in Norman). They had the adapter to connect a DVI LCD to a VGA video card, but not the other way around. I also tried every other major store with an electronics section and every computer store in the yellow pages before ordering the wrong thing from Newegg. It's actually looking like I may be SOL on this. I'm almost convinced that it's not possible.

Yeah looks like that video card only has connectors for VGA and DVI-D. From what I've read, the DVI-D cannot be converted to analog like DVI-I can. Which means it won't support being connected to a VGA monitor /images/graemlins/frown.gif

Ugh. That's what I was afraid of. I wish I'd known that before I bought the damn video card. I didn't even know there were different types of DVI. Oh well. Maybe I'll just move to LCDs quicker than expected.

Yup, mine's the one on the bottom right. DVI-D Dual Link. I wish the video card item description mentioned something about that.
