i'm content with my '98 corolla for at least a couple more years, but would like to get a nice watch with some winnings.

i'm considering the following but am open to any suggestions:

if i saw someone get out of a 98 corolla and had a rolex on, i would definitely think it was really weird.

I love watches. My eventual goal is an Omega Seamaster. Due to the current financial situation a thousand dollar watch is pretty much out of the picture right now, so I endulge my watch habit by getting all kinds of cheaper watches. My most recent daily wear watch is a Swiss Army variety... http://www.quanta.net/ecommerce/ProdImages/79076.jpg

I also like this one, made by the Danish company Skagen. The beauty of these watches is that they are incredibly slim, so they fit nicely underneath dress shirts.

I love my KC watch. Got it about 3 years ago as a gift from my boss for graduation and it was about $100. The style is a bit out-dated now though, since the face is rectangular shaped. I noticed they are going with a wider style almost square-face look now. But I still wear it everyday. It has a purplish-blue face color but the rest is silver. I noticed about a week ago that I have a minor scratch on it now. /images/graemlins/frown.gif

It's a cheap watch but simple and elegant enough to not feel like a schmuck when wearing it in a nice setting.

I'd like to someday be able to own about 4 or 5 different styles of watches to wear with certain clothes. Wearing the same watch all the time gets awfully stale, IMO.

Hi Chisness,

If you are going to get a new watch, then a Rolex is a nice choice, but there are other choices. For example, the Omega Seamaster is a great watch, and not as much money. That first one you listed is terrible, BTW. If you want multiple times, get a Rolex GMT.

Another option is a vintage watch. I have an old Rolex and it's unique and cool (50+ yrs old). Several of today's designs are simply retro designs reborn - you might as well get the original. Nobody else will have one.

The problem with buying high-end vintage watches is that there are fakes. If a price seems too good to believe, it is. However, I have bought several watches from these guys, and they are all top-notch:

www.secondtimearoundwatchco.com (http://www.secondtimearoundwatchco.com)

I wouldn't hesistate to buy a Patek or Rolex from these guys over the web. It will be a great watch, and all original if they state it.

Good luck,
Sucker

JA,

thanks a lot for your post. i agree that rolex is a very good choice for someone younger as the designs are generally fairly sporty but also can be dressy. of course, the name is great cause it's very recognized (though there are far better makes) and very imitated.

i was thinking that i'd get the JC (first one) for college then sell it and switch for a Yachtmaster or Datejust after college. admittedly the JC is cheaply made and fairly ridiculous, but it might be cool to have at this time (since this is about the only time it'd be wearable).

is this plan reasonable? if i did get it, do you think a diamond bracelet would be serious overkill/retarded or cool?

if not, how about something like the following, or do you think i should wait till i'm far older?

Note, new rolex are automatic wind movement with your body. They can't just sit around, you would want them in a box that rotates.

Also the have issues if you golf or do sudden movements that they can get ruined and expensive repairs. But if you got one, the platinum rolex is the way for young people.

youre in college. you drive a corolla. you want a ~$2900 watch?

my suggestion is to be more realistic w/ your money. i just blue booked your car and it clocks in at $3,475 w/ some reasonable estimates on my part.

just spend a few hundred on watch and don't have your friends make fun of you behind your back.

bwana

PS also if you have any credit card debt the money should go there first before youre talking about dropping 3G on a watch too. that's a no-brainer.

EDIT: PPS and im not advocating spending more on a car either. just be responsible. you dont need to go wave your money around and kill yourself and act like you have it. the harder you try usually means the less you have.

Chisness,

The Rolex President is an old-man's watch. Don't get it. I also don't like the diamonds and such in a watch. Get a nice stainless/two-tone watch. There are some old watches that are quite sweet, and some of those in gold are very nice.

A great watch is the Bulova Curvex. Here's one in Rose gold, which is beautiful and very European. This is a fantastic watch, and a new watch that is equivalent would be well over 1500.

http://www.secondtimearoundwatchco.com/WatchesForSale/watches/8116.jpg

http://www.secondtimearoundwatchco.com/WatchesForSale/watches/8116r.jpg

This thing will run for another 100 years. It's a dressy watch, but quite sharp. You can always get a sport watch, too. $450 at Second Time Around.

Another amazing watch is the Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso. They still make them, but they are very expensive. A vintage one is just a beautiful watch, but hard to find. They are really cool because they have two faces and you can flip the watch between a sporty and dressy face. The movement is very complicated.

bwana,

i appreciate your concern and admit that a cheaper watch is most practical. my logic is that i can still make the most out of a car, while a watch can last forever.

i also admit that i'm spending more than necessary, but am certainly not in debt and wouldn't consider putting myself near debt for a luxury.

the part you mention about the harder you try usually means the less you have is also quite true. sounds like you've been reading some finance books! my plan is to buy this luxury then save literally all of the rest of my money during college, so i don't think i'm going too overboard.
