These things area great. I'd play but I'm in the middle of a prop bet that features me playing 30k hands of NLHE without playing a single other game.

Yeah the first few levels are like that and then it slows way down after a lot of the dead money busts and the avg stack is 200bbs+

Seeing some the hands that end up all-in i strongly think ive made some horribel folds.

I noticed that alot in the NLH I played on Sunday - some of the worst play I have ever seen.

This is pretty bad as well. You are in much better shape if you don't move tables as you get to see who the donkeys are.

The plays started to get a bit better but this is going to be a long night if I go deep in this.

I have been meaning to play this but always remember an hour after it started. I finished pretty deep in a Hold'em one and it easily took 9-10 hours

The guy on my left is annoying as hell, he opens alot and calls alot and uses his big stack well.

Our table is getting all the action and the other 2 seem to just be swapping chips around.

Anyway, I have now discovered that its not a good idea for us guys in the UK to play in these. Its nearly 6am and I am meant to be xmas shopping today.

We were 3 handed and chopped. It looked like

Player A - 600,000 - $1070
Player B - 400,000 - $940
Me - 300,000 - $854

Actual prizes if we played on were,

1st $1,391.50
2nd $885.50
3rd $586.96

I don't play many MTT's and have never chopped so I was clueless.

Anyway, thanks beset, filip, spellman and anyone else that watched or supported (or laughed).

Cheers

I thought I recognised that name when the mysterious observer suggested the fair chop. Thanks for that /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Do you have a computer program or spreadsheet that you plug these things into?

Hey, what about me? My one little comment earned you over $30.

The chip leader was trying to screw you (assuming he knew what he was doing), offering what was it? 1200 - 900 - 750 or so.

Usually support does a simple chip stack calculation. This is biased against small stacks since it underestimates your real chances of winning. Such a count would have been a 1125 - 915 - 820 chop.

It's pretty easy to calculate. Just award everybody 3rd place money (since everyone has it locked up) and then distribute the rest by percentage of chips in play. For some reason even stars screws this up often. During the WCOOP lee jones himself totally blew one of the deal calculations screwing one of the chip leaders. I don't know why they stood for it.

12-14-2005, 04:51 AM
You're welcome.

I put it in a spread sheet. But there's no way I can provide a copy, sorry. There is no way to do a perfect chop with 3 or more players.

Pokerstars uses a simple method called a "chip count". The way this works is they give each player 3rd place money (in your case) and then split the rest of the prize pool based on the current chip count. This method is fine if the stack sizes are close (or if there are only 2 players involved - it's perfect in that case), but once someone gets a decent lead (50% or more) it overestimates their share. In your case the chip leader would have been overpaid by about 5%.

A few months ago I read a thread in MTT about a certain theory for estimating fair chops. For the life of me I can't remember what it's called. I can't find it on the search either. I remember how it works though and my spreadsheet is based on it.

Anyway, it's based on the idea of estimating your chances to finish 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc based on stack sizes. Barry Greenstein's site has some info about the general problem here (http://www.barrygreenstein.com/settlements%20in%20tournaments.doc) (note: math heavy).

Grats on the money! Doubt i'll ever play one again.

And i think that splitting isnt all that trivial if one should belive mr greenstein.

Yikes I went out 4th in that bad boy and you chopped after I left!! sigh! I liked the tourney alot but never again on a work night. I went to bed about 3 A.M. and had to wake up at 6A.M. I thought it was a long but fun tourney and took more skill to win than when the blinds really come on fast. I guess the chip leader did good chopping because he came in second, or maybe he just gave up after chop.
