View Full Version : Nominations for the best movie sequel

12-13-2005, 05:27 AM
We have a poll for the worst movie sequel and I'd like to start a poll for the best movie sequel. But first I need a few nominations. In order to qualify the sequel has to be better or as good as the original movie.

The list so far (edited):
Terminator 2
Godfather 2
The Empire Strikes Back
The Return of the Jedi
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
National Lampoon's European Vacation
Road Warrior
Evil Dead 2
Bride of Frakenstein

No one sees the problem with that?

12-13-2005, 05:39 AM
I think I see your point. The storyline of the original Terminator was better than the sequel and it's the special effects of Terminator 2 that make people believe it's the better film. While I personally think the first Terminator is the superior movie, I'm going to include Terminator 2 in the poll because so many people believe T2 to be better then the original.

I didn't read the part that says as good or better, I don;'t like that part. To me a good sequal should be one that doesn't suck ass, those are rare enough.

Bride of Frankenstein is an excellent one. Road Warrior too.

Evil Dead I'll give a pass on. Even more so because it bizarrely chose to be a "do-over" rather than a real sequel. It was funny as hell, but nowhere near as special as the first one, which was a pretty amazing use of no budget at all and one set. Not quite like Lifeboat, but damn, that guy's good.

It is rare to find a good sequel that doesn't suck ass, but the true test of a sequel is to outshine the original movie. Too many times movie producers simply spit out crap to ride the wave of the first movie, rarely do we find gems.

Aliens is an excellent choice! I totally forgot about Aliens. I didn't like Temple of Doom but did enjoy Last Crusade. Technically Red Dragon is a prequel and I didn't like American Pie 2, but I'll give thought to any of those movies if others agree they should be included. I certainly don't want to be nominations nazi.

I need 2ed's for:
From Russia With Love
Rocky IV
Dogma (I don't consider it a sequel but I'll include it with a 2ed)
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly (I'm being told it's not a sequel)
And any other movie that's been posted that hasn't been put on the list. Either I don't feel they should be nominated or I simply haven't seen them but again I'll include them if others feel they belong.

GB&U - I say it is. Clint wears the distinctive poncho in all 3 'dollars' films at some point, which I call makes him the same character. Therefore they are a sequence of linked movies. (EDIT: There is debate whether the first two are linked and the third is not, whether none of them are linked at all and Clint is a different character in each, and so on. I site the poncho as my only proof. I won't be peeved if TGTBATU isn't included though)

So what if it's a bond movie, it's still not the first one in a series of linked films, and it therefore a sequel.

Kill Bill 2 is a great film and a sequel, despite the fact the two films really should be watched back to back.

I find it hard to see how Aliens doesn't win this though.

Sequel Pop Quiz:

Can anyone tell me the first sequel that used the postfix '2' in its title (ie first film was Squirilla, sequel was Squirilla 2)

Some historians cite Godfather as the first, but they are wrong!

Can anyone tell me? I'll give clues later if not.

[/ QUOTE ]

After Tarantino finished the film, it was too long to be made into one movie. So instead he split it into volume 1 and volume 2. It's not Kill Bill 2 but rather Kill Bill Volume 2. Both volumes were filmed together and intended to be one film.

evil_twin
12-13-2005, 08:41 AM
You're right and I should not have called it Kill Bill 2, it's Kill Bill Volume 2. I'm aware of how the two parts of the film came about. I still maintain it's a sequel. All the critics called it a sequel at the time (check a few reviews), furthermore it fits the dictionary definition. Thus, sequel.

12-13-2005, 08:43 AM
I almost don't consider Godfather 2 to be a sequel. I think even Copolla said it wasn't a sequel but a continuation of the first movie. But Godfather 2 was filmed at a different time then the first and the movie doesn't continue immediately after Godfather 1 like Kill Bill 2 does.
