View Full Version : Racist and offensive avatars

12-12-2005, 03:56 AM
Not sure where this post belongs.
Anyone one else offended by certain avatars?

Does anyone else not want to look at PairOfElevens avatar when browsing through the forum?

It is a rather nauseating image of the gaping mouth of a toothless Jim Crow caricature.

Link to one of his posts (http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Board=smallholdem&Number=416889 9&Searchpage=1&Main=4163629&Words=+PairOfElevens&t opic=&Search=true#Post4168899)

I'm not African American, by the way, nor particularly politically correct. I'd just rather not have to watch these images on an otherwise terrific forum. His posts are otherwise rather good.

Please feel free to flame the newbie.

use adblock on the avatards you find offensive.

Done. Wasn't aware of this option.
Told you I was a newbie.

The forum will now be a much more pleasant experience.

Thank you

no problem, we all start somewhere.

No flame...

Near the bottom of the forum listing (to your left), you'll find "Forum Suggestions." Kind of mis-leading because a lot of questions are quickly and politely answered there. Enjoy your 2+2 venture and g/l.

The problem with this is that doing just this, without providing feedback to the management, doesn't put any pressure on the twit in question to change his avatar.

Offensive avatars have actually been discussed recently amongst the moderators. If you're offended I would highly suggest reporting the avatar to the moderator of the forum or directly to Mat.

My first flame!
I'm so proud.
I am now truly a member of twoplustwo.

P.S. Could a moderator please move this thread to Forum Suggestions? Thank you.

Personally, I really haven't found anyone's avatar to be offensive. What I would find offensive is 2+2 caving in to the ravings of a dozen or so people who do find them offensive when avatars can be simply be turned off. I realize that 2+2 might just be trying to play the C.Y.A game, but I haven't seen anything pornographic or anything that can be viewed as a personal attack against another poster.

One more thing, to the OP, don't venture into the politics forum. Your head might explode.

Actually, there have been significant improvements recently. Perhaps the moderators did do something, or they were voluntarily removed.

I do believe in free speech. It's very unusual for me to bring up such a point.

Some of the images just truly made me feel nauseous. Every time, I opened a thread, I was hoping certain members would not be posting, just to not have to see their avatars.

Now that the problem has been resolved, can a moderator please delete this thread or move it to "Forum Suggestions"?

Thank you

My Home -> Edit Display... -> View user's pictures with their posts? = No.

That will get rid of all avatars.

I did this for two reasons.

First, I agree with the OP that I found a lot of the pictures distateful or sophomoric. And I'm a raving liberal who likes dirty jokes and boobs at least as much as the next guy.

Secondly, there are many, many people who will happily use an 1200x800 GIF file as their avatar. They don't think it's a big deal, but it is. When the page loads, it's loading that massive GIF every time. When you scroll, often times the scrolling lags because of the huge graphic.

I tried adblocking for awhile, but I really found it much nicer viewing with all avatars off.

Regards,

T

Am I missing something, or is that just Bert from Sesame Street making an angry face?

Yes, it is Bert now. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

PairOfElevens just changed his avatar. Much, much better. /images/graemlins/smile.gif /images/graemlins/smile.gif /images/graemlins/smile.gif

The members or the moderators must have reacted to my post.
The most distasteful avatars seem to have been removed or replaced.

Complaining about being offended on the internet is like complaining about getting wet in a swimming pool.

You find looking at an image of a black person nauseating?

I find your name offensive, it's glorifying crime.

The moderators should force you to change it.

I'm not African American, by the way, nor particularly politically correct.

So you're just an uptight nit then?

Distasteful and sophomoric? In a forum packed with college students?? Never! /images/graemlins/grin.gif

And I like the new term: avatards.

And why should it? The only problem is guys like this being easily offended, so if anyone who doesn't like it can stop having to see it, why should the twit be pressured to change it?
