I'm getting a second TV for my bedroom, and I don't need anything fancy. No plasma screen/LCD/HD, etc. Just a decent 27" box for like $300 or so. Should I stick with Sony, or do we prefer something else?

I recently bought a 24" Sanyo at Wal-Mart and love it. A steal at $164.

A agree, if you're just buying a normal tube TV, no need in buying Sony. There is very little difference between brands.

if you want cheap, walmart's the way to go

I've actually had negative sony experiences for tube tvs

go with the Sanyo...cheaper and more reliable from my anecdotal evidence.

Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your opinion) there's no WalMart in L.A. My choices are Target & Best Buy, or Fry's if I want to drive.

Has anyone heard of the brand Insignia? I'm skeptical.

you can probably hit an easy jackpot for something in this range via classified ads

hmmm...just looked at today's Best Buy ad circular

32" Sharp (32C241) for 259.99

The Sharp my family owns has performed better than the sony tvs we have owned. The picture is not as sharp though, but still quite good and pleasant to the eye.

At Radio Shack and Target and some other stores you can get RCA's really dirt cheap. I've had a 27 inch one for years, and it has last me through uncountable power surges and looks fine from across the room. It's also marketed under some other brand names. You can tell by the signature styling at the bottom of the screen that the box comes from the same maker, so if you see it elsewhere, you might get it even cheaper. But it's dirt cheap and quite good.

While I was carrying the TV out of her house, she dropped the remote in a pan full of water. She dried it off best she could and I took it anyway.

I just plugged it in and it looks fine. This is about what I would have settled for paying $150-$250 at Best Buy/Target, except it's like 5 yrs old and doesn't have RCA A/V inputs (luckily I have a Radio Shack adapter I can use). Color, sound, etc. all appear acceptable. Best $10 I've spent in a while.

And the remote still works.
