View Full Version : 99 turned set...Did I play the flop too aggressively?

I know the turn and river is pretty standard. I 3-bet preflop occasionally in good position with 99, which was the case this time. Did I play this too strong on the flop? Should I have just called here instead of raised?

Here are the reads I have so far:

MP3 is 21/8/1.07 through 1100 hands
MP1 is extreme LAG, 69/21/2.72 through 130 hands
I did not have a read on BB yet

Hero has 9 /images/graemlins/heart.gif 9 /images/graemlins/diamond.gif

Preflop: 2 folds, MP1 calls, 1 fold, MP3 raises, Hero 3-bets, Button folds, SB folds, BB calls 2 bets, MP1 caps, MP3 calls, Hero calls, BB calls

Flop: (16.5 Small Bets) 7 /images/graemlins/spade.gif 4 /images/graemlins/heart.gif 3 /images/graemlins/spade.gif
BB checks, MP1 bets, MP3 calls, Hero raises, BB calls 2 bets, MP1 3 bets, MP3 folds, Hero calls, BB caps, MP1 calls, Hero calls

(At this point I'm real confused with the betting. I'm not necessarily that worried about MP1 since he's been playing erratically all night long and he could have a wide range of hands. BB's check-call 2 bets, cap is making me think.)

Turn: (14.75 Big Bets) 9 /images/graemlins/club.gif

BB bets, MP1 raises, Hero 3 bets, BB calls 2 bets, MP1 calls

River: (23.75 Big Bets) J /images/graemlins/diamond.gif

BB bets, MP1 calls, Hero raises, BB calls, MP1 calls

BB shows 4 /images/graemlins/club.gif 4 /images/graemlins/spade.gif
MP1 shows T /images/graemlins/diamond.gif T /images/graemlins/club.gif

Final Pot: 29.75 Big Bets

I like it. The BB either flopped a straight or baby set. You don't know this until he caps. MP1 could have anything. How he raised 20 percent of his hands and has TT in this position confused me. I think if the turn were Qx, and the turn is bet, raise, I'd probably fold it. Nice hand.

Easy flop raise for value and to thin the field with a vulnerable hand.
