Like many OOTers I like porn, video games, a certain card game, fringe movies and alcohol. Sadly many of the people on my gift list do not share these interests. After many years of this wretched holiday exchange I still suck at finding gifts for people who have very different interests than I.

I can't be alone in this, do everyone a service and post your great successes and horrofic failures at pleasing the hard to buy for.

um, gift cards?

saves them the trouble of asking for the receipt too...

but for my brother, his wife, and two young kids, they're getting the complete Calvin and Hobbes collection for the year, and my dad is getting a membership at CostCo.

The trouble with gift cards is that I inevitably spend more than I intended to because the recipent gets to see exactly how much you think they are worth. In contrast you can definately get away with less if it appears that you put actual thought into the purchase.

I've only bought one present so far.

For a lot of girls a book is a good present, as long as you write something and sign the inside cover.

When in doubt, just pick up something cashmere.

Gift cards are terribly impersonal, I never liked to give them except when I just didn't give a [censored].

I recommend "DEFECTIVE--RETURN TO PUBLISHER."

So far:

Getting my little brother tickets to either Knicks/Rockets or Knicks/Mavs, because he's a douche and likes those teams more than New York. I'm also giving him the book A Game of Thrones, and whichever other books I finish in the series before Christmas.

Getting my mother The DaVinci Code, since she hasn't read it yet, and tickets to Rent on Broadway, and the Rent soundtrack.
