Can you remember a time when most of the stores were closed on Sunday? I seem to remember it being like a ghost town on Sundays driving around with my parents as a little kid here in Southern Cal., up until the late 1960's or so.

Sears was closed for sure, Newberry's, JCPenney, McDonald's(?), gas stations(?), etc...

The only thing I can remember being open were Churches, Liquor Stores, and maybe Sambo's restaurant. Could you see a movie on Sundays back then (walk-ins, Drive-ins),? I forget, probably so.

I'm originally from Rhode Island and the stores are still closed (I think) /images/smile.gif .

I was in LA then. I believe we looked for a Thrify Drug store.

Some small stores would open to sell newspapers, etc., but would close when church let out. Some family restaurants would stay open until mid afternoon. 5% of gas stations would be open - you had to know which ones in case you needed a fill up. But it was common to fill up on Sat.

I remember that after 5PM the only thing open was an occassional pharmacy.
