View Full Version : OT: This football promotion is kinda dumb

12-07-2005, 10:41 AM
So it's 900am on 12/7/05. I'm bored at work and ready to answer the first question. The only problem....PARTY hasn't updated their player points yet! AARRGGG!! How much longer must I wait?

Ok, I'll help you out:

Who won the 1985 Superbowl?

12-07-2005, 10:51 AM

is this the actual question?

if they are this easy, then your share of 1million will be maybe $20

if they are making you predict something that happens in the upcoming games, then your odds of getting the million is 1 in several billion, so your ev is <a penny for the million share

No clue what this promotion is or how technical they're getting, but the Super Bowl the Bears won was played in 1986.

You're right... people always cite the 1985 "Bears" referring to the season. I wouldn't know off top of head who wone in '85.

... and I checked my account. Party Points have been updated for 12/6, but no changes to football promotion. I don't know if Santa has dropped another day because I managed to get 96 regular points yesterday.

if they asked a question like that, they'd need to say Superbowl XXIV or whatever, not the year since that is ambiguous

There is nothing ambiguous about "Who won the superbowl in 1985?" That is pretty clearly "what team won the football game called the superbowl that was played in the year 1985?" Ambiguity created by the reader is not ambiguity.

Nicholasp27
12-07-2005, 01:01 PM
the superbowl is for the 1985 season, even if played in 1986, so many people will think of the 1985 champions since that is the year in the question

i realize that, taken literally, only 1 superbowl was played, and won, in 1985, but many people will know the answer but say the wrong team because they think of the 1985 champions, not the 1984 champions

i've only ever seen the question asked as who won superbowl XXVI, not as who won the 1985 superbowl, and probably for this reason

I am surprised the NFL hasn't cracked down on this yet. Having a poker site use the phrase "National Football League" is very un-NFL.

12-07-2005, 01:10 PM
the contest will be enabled in 2-4 hours...at least thats what they told me

i didnt think of that, but you are definitely right.

Here's the question:

1: Which team will win the game on December 12?
a) : New Orleans
b) : Atlanta

Handicap on!

Nicholasp27
12-07-2005, 01:58 PM
well then it's pretty much impossible to win the million...and only like a 3% chance of even getting all 5 right in a week...

btw, the answer is b) Atlanta, of course

Question is up!

Who wins: New Orleans or atlanta

[censored] PP and their stupid [censored] promotions.

Assume a 50% correct guess...

5 of 5 each week: 1 in 32
4 of 5 each week: 1 in 6.4

40 of 40 correct: 1 in a Trillion (Really)

At 60% correct guess: close to 1 in a Billion

It is unlikely anyone gets part of the $1 million.

Hornacek
12-07-2005, 02:00 PM
I'd say the odds on Atlanta winning are about 80%. The latest line is 10.5, and I've heard one StDev in football games is about 6 pts. At least this one seems like a gimme, but the lesson of the day (as always) could be...

Variance can be a bitch.

12-07-2005, 02:03 PM
Well if one can pick 40 in a row, then one deserves a million bones. And nobody else is offering it, so might as well be Party. 30 party points is nothing and you are basically going to earn it anyway.

So it's pretty much free shot at $1M that nobody else is offering. Why are we being so critical of Party on this?

So the next question is going to be who wins Green Bay or Detroit I would imagine. That one could be tougher.

This is easily solved.

All you need to do is sign up for 40!*2 party accounts.

Then for today's question pick 1/2 atlanta and 1/2 norleans - then you only will have to fill out the half that won next week.

I should have thought of this yesterday.

Now the question is assume that the favorite wins 35 times and you are in the last week. Do you start choosing underdogs to seperate you from all the other people that just took favorites?

Hornacek

I'd rather cross this bridge if and when I reach it, and feel very fortunate that I've reached it.

zipppy

Plus, at some point (probably will happen with the first week) an underdog is going to win. When this happens, most of the people left with a shot at the million are gamboolers, those that like to choose underdogs.

Anyone making sidebets on whether or not anyone wins a piece of the 1 million? I've got a $55 buyin that says no one does. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

This will be a leak in my game.

I didn't pick at all but if I do I won't pick the falcons. The NFL is rigged so whenever I pick against the New Orleans Saints in any pool or anything no matter how big a dog they are (read: week 1 suicide pool exit due to rigged nfl)

Why do you think the patriots won the superbowl two years in a row?
