View Full Version : Starting a poker career

Actually the subject of this post is misleading because I am not planning on eventually playing poker professionally, but would like it to be a nice secondary source of income. I have many questions on how and where to start any any links to relative threads would be great.

Here's my situation. I'm a college student whose been playing poker recreationally for around 2 years. Of course I did what every kid does and just played alot of NL home games. I've always loved poker and it seemed to come natural to me. Since I can remember I've been a fairly consistent winner. About a year ago I skimmed over TTOP and started playing party $10 SNGs and 1/2 6 max with a $50 roll (no clue what i was doing). Luckily I ran realllllly lucky and ended up cashing out $550 and quit online for awhile. Since then ive been making money playing NL at live games and casino. After winning $700 and a NL 1-2 session at a local casino things started to go downhill. Cockiness set in and I lost all of it and more playing NL on poker sites with no consideration for bankroll managment. I then took a break and became very serious about my game.

Now here's me now. Just finished reading SSHE (AMAZING) and planning on rereading it till the pages wither away. Funds right now are hurting. I have PT and started with a $60 roll multitabling PokerStars .10/.20 for about 2 weeks. I was up to $90 but had to cashout bc of again, hurting funds. This is the last time I will ever mix poker and "real life" money.

The point of all of this is to let anyone who can be helpful know where I'm at and possibly point me in a direction. I've been dedicated to studying the game (SSHE and 2+2 forums) for at least 1-2 hours a night. Trust me I would be willing to do this MUCH more, but being in school my schedule is very busy. After the new year I will have enough so I can start where I left off with $90 at Stars.

Basically I am looking for some sort of plan. What sites to play, how to multitable properly (3 tables overlap badly), what books to read after SSHE, when to move up in limits, goals to set, etc. I am willing to do whatever it takes to increase my knowledge of the game, I just need advice to what I need to do (for example, I have a folder on my desktop for poker, but dont know what to put in it). I know this is a long post, so since you spent all this time reading it maybe you can shed some light for an aspiring player.

Good post, im in relatively the same boat, just started playin and am reading SSHE whenever i get some free time. Love 2+2 forums and am very curious to the responses. My only advice is to become friends with someone on the forum who can maybe help coach you. Also get pockerace @ http://www.pokeracesoftware.com/

Oh, and as for books, since you've read TOP and SSH, you'll probably want to get HPFAP and King Yao's book next.

I'm only 2/3 thru w/ King Yao's book so maybe I haven't gotten to the good stuff yet, but from what I've read so far I wouldn't recommend it. It's not as good as sshe and doesn't have any additional material, except maybe for playing shorthanded (and the dummied down math really annoys me).

wookie, cant thank you enough. Your bankroll bulding thread is actually one of the reasons I made this one. I remembered reading it a while back and was hoping someone would respond to this by sending me the link. guess it worked....as for pokerace HUD, I currenty have GT+ but am not using it at the moment bc im playing at stars. Is there a big difference between these 2 programs that makes ace so much better?

My "poker career" story is fairly similar to yours. I won a tournament at a local casino and had some success playing live 3/6. I then played online and also ran really well at .50/1 NL. Then, I found out that bankroll considerations applied as much to me as to anyone else.

What I decided (just recently) to do is to get $50.00 on Pokerstars, because that was the most I could afford at the time. I'm gradually moving up the limits, but I will not move up until I have 300 BBs for the next limit. I went to .10/.20 when I got to $60, and am about to move to .25/.50.

It's worked pretty well for me both by teaching me the discipline to keep a bank roll and by allowing me to focus on improving my grasp on the game while playing at limits I can easily beat.
