I'm looking at you, Slowplay Ray.

Let's get a little discussion going. What's your favorite song/album/live recording of theirs?

Song: Friend of the Devil
Album: Wake of the Flood
Live Show: Garcia and Kahn live at Oregon Stae Prison, 5/2/82

Jack Straw and Sugar Magnolia have always been my favorite songs. I own a couple of their studio albums, but have mainly listened to the Dick's Picks

Ah geez. This is too tough to answer, so I'll go with the few that pop in my head:

Song: Althea, Friend of the Devil, China Cat Sunflower, Scarlet Begonias, Loser
Album: Workingman's Dead, but I almost never listen to their studio albums...
Live: presently, 8/7/82 (Alpine Valley) and 12/29/77 (Winterland, Dick's Picks #10)...this changes frequently though.

Song: Terrapin Station
Album: does Europe 72 count?
Live Show: most of the Fillmore East run from 71, and of course many of the fall 77 shows. besides Cornell, Boston Garden and Buffalo are fantastic.

Song: Truckin'
Album: Workingman's Dead
Live Show: Quaker City Rock Festival, 12/68 - this concert featured the Dead, Steppenwolf, Iron Butterfly, Sly & the Family Stone, and Woody's Truck Stop (Todd Rundgren). All acts were great, but Sly stole the show. And it's not even close.

yeah, I was 2. saw my first show in 92 in Boston Garden. actually a great show.

for spring break my senior year in high school, I drove down to see shows in DC, Atlanta, and Chapel Hill. those shows were very good, but as periods goe, the 90's are well behind the early & late 70's. too bad.

Right I don't think this question is answerable, 2 months ago I would told you US Blues and Black Throated wind would have been my favorite and something from 71/2 woulda been my fav. To hard to answer

oh, I listened to plenty of Phish. I saw some pretty early phish shows - 91/92 and such. I remember a great woods show from 91? I think, when they opened for Santana, and they were on fire. and I remember going to a gymnasium show at UNH in 92 or 93 where I managed to stand front row (there were only about 500 people there). my ears rang for 3 days.

1st of all, Bobby does NOT have "the voice" - I hate his cowboy songs. 2nd, I saw Ratdog a few weeks ago in Worcester, and I almost fell asleep. Quite possibly the last Ratdog show I ever go too. Nowadays, I would much rather go see Moe. or O.A.R. or Gov't Mule or John Butler Trio, etc, etc, etc than a Dead-related show. Sad but true.

Hey, finally a thread where I have some expertise /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I saw about 240 shows, from '81 to '95. Too many favs to pick just one song or show, but my short list would include:

2-28-69
11-11-73
12-31-81 (my first show)
10-15-83 (probably my fav. - wasn't there but wish I was. The China>Rider>Playin'>China Doll that opens set II is transcendent.)
1984 Greek Theater run
1989 Cal Expo run

Too much fun...

I much prefer the Buffalo show over the Cornell show. The Cornell show is just more popular because it got much more circulation on tape early on.

I really don't like hearing Phil sing. The early Phil & Friends shows I went to were very harsh, because he insisted on singing almost every song. Fortunately he has relaxed a bit and let various Friends do more singing.

RatDog shows can be good, but not as dynamic. I don't usually go see those anymore.

Unfortunately I was born in the 70's and only got to see a half dozen live Dead shows - it would've been sweet to see a bunch of those shows from the 70's live.

I also saw 60-70 Phish shows, and I'd have to agree that pre-1998 were better shows. Though I enjoyed them all.

There's a lot of good music out there now.
