I entered last night's $36+3 satellite for the Sunday $200+15 tourney. 98 players, top 16 get entry into tourney, 17th get $88. This is the first satellite I've entered and I found strategy to be quite a bit different than a regular tourney. My basic strategy wasn't so much to build the biggest stack as much as just maintaining an above average one and avoiding confrontations with bigger stacks. Here's the report:

Hand #7, blinds 10/20, 9 handed, I have T1500
Q6o in BB. LP calls, SB completes. Flop comes

Qh Qd 3d

And I like it. SB checks, I check, LP checks. Turn comes 7s. SB bets 40, I raise to 200, LP & SB call. River comes 2s. I bet 400, only LP calls. His trap fails as he has AA. This puts me at 2340 and in the top ten.

Hand #26, 15/30, 9 handed, I have T1880
MP T750 short stack raises to 240. From CO I raise to 750 to get him all-in with 99. Only he calls with AQs. Board gives him no help and I move to T2675 and in upper 1/4 of stacks.

Hand #62, 50/100, 8 handed, T2200
Didn't get too many hands and now I've drifted to average stack size. I get 22 in EP and raise to 300. I get two callers with T1645 and T4475. Flop comes

Jd 3d 6d

And it gets checked around. Turn is 4s and again checked around. River is 5s, giving me a str8, I bet 400 and they both fold.

Hand #64, 50/100, 8 handed, T2970
I have 66 UTG and raise to 300. T570 goes all-in and only I call. He has 54s and I win easily to go to T3690 and again have an above average stack.

Hand #86, 75/150, 8 handed, T2990
UTG calls with T2100. I have AKo and raise to 900. Only UTG calls. Flop comes

Kc Ad Ac

And it's a fair flop for my hand. He checks, I bet 1200 to put him all-in and he calls with a dead A7s. I move T5315 and very comfortably in top 16. Game plan is simply to maintain a place in middle of pack as we're under 30 players now. I want to avoid big stacks and just confront small stacks I get HU with that I think I have a good shot at busting out.

Hand #93, 100/200, 8 handed, T4990
After making plans not to get involved at all with bigger stacks I go ahead and do it anyways when I get AQd and raise to 600 a T6901 stack who limped. Flop comes

3c Qc 2c

He bets 200 and I call. Turn is 9h, he bets 600 and I call. River is Ac, putting 4 clubs on the board and when he bets 1K, I fold. Should have folded preflop as I had no reason to get involved in the hand. Now my T3590 stack leaves me around 20 of 25 and now I can't just coast to top 16.

Hand #121, 100/200 a25, 6 handed, T3840
3 tables left, all but 2 on last two tables get ticket punched. In BB with T9o. Same limper who shook me off two pair in previous hand limps again. Folded to me, I check. Flop comes

5h 7s 9c

I bet out 400. He calls. Turn comes 2c, check, check. River Qc, check, check, I take it down. He had A7o.

Hand #125, 100/200 a25, 6 handed, T4940
I get KQ in EP on an extremely tight table now that we're just one player from final 2 tables. I raise to 600. Same guy who called in last couple of hands calls from the BB with a T10201 stack. Flop comes

8d 4s 6h

He bets 200, I call. Turn is Qh. He bets 1000, I call. Normally, I would raise here, but in this instance I see no reason to being so close to the last 16. River is 2d, check, check. He has T8s and I move to T6965.

Now I'm firmly in upper half of players with 19 left, next one out we combine to 2 tables. With only 3 left to be eliminated and a healthy stack, I go into post & fold mode looking to coast to the top 16.

Hand #148, 200/400 a25, 8 handed, T5215
17th player eliminated, I coast to top 16 as planned /forums/images/icons/cool.gif

See ya all at Sunday's $200 NLHE.

Hand #62

Unless the table is really, really tight and you feel like you have great control over your opponents, I can't see raising 22 from EP being a positive EV move.

Hand #86

You got to check behind on that flop! What if he didn't have the other ace? Let him bluff, or catch something.

Hand #93 (AQ vs. the big stack)

Talk about a double-edged flop. Given the situation, I think you played this well after the flop. But before the flop you have to raise more to actually have a chance of taking it down - 3xBB with a limper just isn't enough - or fold.

Congrats on qualifying.
