i post this in computer tech help also but it will get way less views there im sure.

my computer crashed and i got the blue screen. both my hard drives arent recognized anymore. if i hook these up to another computer with windows already installed is there a program i can use to find my data or repair the drive? partition magic comes to mind..

so anyways, it cant recognize anything about the drive. not the size, the name, or the partitions.

i find it hard to believe the data is gone since the crash was only 1 second. maybe there was a short circuit or something and the drives are fried? i cannot think of another reason why both my harddrives are ruined.

yea so i lost like a few 100+ gigs of stuff. I will offer money for knowledge on how to obtain my lost data. $100+

It doesn't take more than a second to lose everything, so it very well may be lost. Take it to a computer repair shop, they will tell you if the harddrives are fried. If they are, take it to someone who specializes in data retrieval. It may be possible to get your data back, but odds are this will cost several hundred dollars.

Think of this as a reminder to back up your data on a regular basis.

Try VirtualLab (http://www.download.com/BinaryBiz-VirtualLab/3000-2248_4-10408366.html). I've used it to recover more than one unreadable drive in the past (computers are my job).

how does it only take a second to completely erase everything?? or do you just mean make it difficult to retrieve?

yea my backup for my 160 gig was on the 400 gig which was in the same computer /images/graemlins/frown.gif i didnt know harddrive problems were contagious

What type of OS are you plugging the possibly bad hard drives into?

Do the following:

control panel -> system ->hardware tab -> device manger button -> disk drives

how many drives are listed? if the drives are listed but your not seeing them in My Computer the drives will need to be mapped. Let me know if this works, there are other things you can try as well.

Will the PC no longer boot up or are the hard drives the only bad component? The PC that you are plugging your "bad" drives into may not be able to recognize your "bad" drives because they are big.

You could try this: http://www.stellarinfo.com/partition-recovery.htm

PS No need to send me the 100 bucks if it works /images/graemlins/smile.gif

PPS I am nearly certain that your data is recoverable... just an issue of cost

If that program doesn't work, try using one of the bootable Knoppix (linux variant) cds and getting into the HD that way. I think they even make a distro that is specifically designed as a rescue cd.

I assume your hard drive partitions are NTFS?

Try this program to make a bootable floppy to access NTFS partitions that win2k and XP use:

http://www.datapol.de/en

and

http://www.datapol-technologies.com/dpe/freeware/index.html

the bootable floppy disk will also allow you to run chdsk too if I remember correctly. you may be able to bootup after running chdsk too.

ideally, you'd make a bootable cd that could read ntfs that could access the cd burner.

i have used this program to make bootable CDs that contain uptodate virus files that can read ntfs.

alright i got it all fixed. most of the stuff i tried was usless. i received my new harddrive today, installed windows, and tried my fried drives as slave. the first one or two reboots they werent recognized but then they all were at once. weird.

so i guess i win myself 100 bucks.
