View Full Version : Coming to Boston

I'll be in Boston in late August for a week and I'm thinking about using Foxwoods or Mohegan Sun as an excuse to escape from my girlfriend's parents' house. I've never been to either casino.

If I play, it'll be a two day excursion, with a rented car, a one-night hotel stay, and hopefully some 2+2 encounters.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Thanks,

Tommy

If you're interested in tournaments, they are bigger and better run at Foxwoods, though I'm told the fields are softer at Mohegan. The Tuesday night NLH and Saturday morning limit H at Foxwoods sell out at 200 players, and have prize pools of about $20K and $9K respectively.

For live games, Foxwoods always has 5-10, 10-20, and 20-40 in holdem and stud. 5-10 Omaha8 goes most of the time I think. 40-80 and/or 75-150 stud also goes most of the time. On weekends, we usually play 50-100 or 75-150 HOE at Mohegan, and sometimes there are games as high as 300-600. Mohegan has 10-20 and smaller in stud and holdem, and 20-40 stud. 20-40 holdem doesn't go there like it used to.

You can stay onsite at both places, but hotels cost a lot. In fact, all hotels cost a lot this time of year, though you can find much cheaper places offsite, within 1-15 miles. Sorry I don't have any specific recommendations.

It will take you about 2 hours to come down here from Boston proper, and if you're going to play either of those holdem tourneys I mentioned above, you need to be there almost an hour early or you'll get shut out.

Let us all know once your plans get finalized, and I'll try to be there one of your days to say hello.

This sounds like a great opportunity for us East-Coasters to have our copies of I'm Running Bad signed by the artist! /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

I can't speak for the quality of the mid-limit games, but I tend to find the dealers and players a little easier to get along with at Mohegan. You will have to play at both, they are only 10-15 minutes apart.

As far as hotels/motels: to stay on site is pricey, but no more expensive than folding AA pre flop twice. I can't really speak for off site bargains, it really depends on what you are shooting for. I know I drive by a Ramada in Norwich just a few highway minutes from the Sun that has to be cheaper - it is on the opposite side from Foxwoods though. There must be people who have experience with other options.

Are you thinking weekday or weekend?

Thoughts?

Awesome, I'm looking forward to the chance to meet you. Hopefully you'll have time to let me take you to lunch or dinner.

Suggestions?

What are you looking for? If you just want to play cards, Foxwoods is the place. They spread a lot more games, especially middle limit hold'em. Mohegan is a beautiful place, definitely worth visiting if you are going to be there for two days. The two casinos are only 10 or 15 minutes apart so visiting both shouldn't be any trouble.

Feel free to PM me if you have specific questions in mind.

Thanks for all the info, Greg. I printed it out and put it in my suitcase. I'll definitely let you know of any firm plans.

"I tend to find the dealers and players a little easier to get along with at Mohegan."

Sold.

"You will have to play at both, they are only 10-15 minutes apart."

I didn't know. I'll go to both or neither. Was there restaurant-cluster effect? Where nearby competition brings in more money for everyone?

"As far as hotels/motels: to stay on site is pricey, but no more expensive than folding AA pre flop twice."

:-)

"Are you thinking weekday or weekend?"

Weekdays.

You've managed to finagle a free meal from 2000 miles away. You are good.

Tommy,

Look for my Mom at the nickel slots then recruit her for a foray at the craps table. She has a real good shooter's arm /forums/images/icons/smile.gif.

Tommy, definitely get in touch with me when you come up. In fact, let me know before hand. I'd love to make a foxwoods excursion with you, and potentially give you some pre-insight into the 20 game up here at the woods. I'll be working in the cardiac critical care unit so I might not be able to actually play, but if we got together for dinner or something that'd be sweet. Keep in touch.

It's all about the comps, Ulysses. I'm not about to spend any cash. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Too late, you missed your chance when I was in Vegas. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Seriously, if you are visiting anytime soon let me know. I think they've got a place around here that serves sprouts and berries real cheap.

All these ideas are nice but the truth is you should come to my $1-$2 home game at Harvard the Wednesday or Thursday night you're in town. I'll have air-conditioning and a felt table by then. And, no rake!

We'll tell you the Romanian joke.

Felt, AC, no rake, AND the Romanian joke? I'm definitely going to try have an open Thursday while there. Just one thing. I need to know if I will then be qualified to tell people that I went to Harvard.

Tommy,

Forget the Romanian joke, in MY home game, we have some Polish jokes, some Italian jokes, and a dog named Sambuca! Also, the fridge is next to the table, and stocked. The table is felt-like. JTG can attest to this since he is a regular in the home game. I even have a glossy photo of 72o hanging below my picture of the Vegas strip.

Now that's what I call a "poker shrine", and I won't get into the home theatre thing /forums/images/icons/grin.gif . Besides, who needs Harvard, what could you possibly learn in that game besides how to hold your pinky when raising?

I was hoping you'd pop up and offer Tommy an invitation to our game.

Felt, free food, free drink, no rake, and a copule of 2+2ers. How can you resist, Tommy?

And yes, the 72o photo Joe has on his wall is stolen from your website. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Hey Jimmy,

Can we talk about Emerson?

The article is indeed in the winter Raritan.

Who are you? A poki person?

These poki people poke up a lot!

Incidentally, when I raise I use ONLY my pinkies.

FYI, if you plan on going to mohegan sun which for hold 'em the biggest game is usually 10-20 w/ 1/2 kill during the week. Sometimes they get a few 20-40 and something with green chips on the weekends but the green chip game isn't always there. Anyway, the Best Western Crisata Inn is about a 3 min drive from Mohegan sun and the rates are usually about a 3rd.

Have a good trip. S'pose you oughta try to see the Dead Sux while you're there, esp if The Weasel's pitchin'. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif
