View Full Version : putting the "rock" back in "indie rock"

Some people were complaining that indie rock doesn’t, well, rock enough. The truth is a lot of the stuff that comes out labeled as indie rock has a particular style that goes for a more lo-fi or a country feel, like Modest Mouse or Pavement. Still, there’re plenty of indie rock artists that come with some great rockin guitar that might appeal to more people out there. I’ve uploaded a zip file that contains some songs.

I know it’s a bit of a pain to download from rapidshare, but it’s 13 songs (80 mb). I think it’ll be pretty worth it – all of them are good songs. And thorough.

Jack has good taste. I have sixteen songs uploaded to rapidshare right now separately and zipped together as well. It comes out to about 80 megs and 60 minutes, but I don't want to steal Jack's thunder, so I'll post those links tomorrow or maybe later tonight.

I hope you guys give every song a chance though.

Wait...I wrote that, but I thought I deleted it before submitting. Did I actually go back and edit it out? Or are you just watching me?

No, lol, I was referring to the fact that I got into BTS because of your recommendation.

Yeah, everybody should get into Built to Spill. Then again, I don't even call him Doug Martsch anymore. I just call him Dougie-poo...my Dougie-poo.

Def download and listen to the Built To Spill song "Else", no doubt my all time favorite song - and I dont even like indie rock that much.

In that Secret Machines song, the drum sounds exactly like John Bonham. The rhythm and sound of it. Is that sampled or is he just copying it real well?

the rat is by far much the best on this list. have only not heard that kasabian song. worth listening to? if so up it seperately.

also, always funny listening to someone recommending a band i have listened to for over 10 years (built to spill). hey, ever heard of the velvet underground? how about the beatles?

So there's more than one way to put the "rock" back in indie. Ask DcifrThs.

Jack of Arcades,

Thanks for this.

Sincerely,
An old fart with 3 kids who doesn't have time to look for this sort of good stuff.

a couple months ago i saw the kings of leon play 930 club in dc, and the secret machines opened for them. really [censored] good, and i'm glad to be reminded of them...the online cd also had the rat on it and the von bondies c'mon c'mon...great purchase all in all...

thanks for the upload

This mix has my 100% approval. And reminded me of a thread idea I had the other day.

Awesome stuff man, thanks. Favorites are Kasabian, Von Bondies, and Wolf Parade. Would definitely like to see more stuff like this.

i actually like this kind of idea. sadly, i am halfway through the list and i think it is all pretty much crap. especially this rat song. i have a very good memory and i remember in the past in all the indie rock threads someone would mention this song and then a ton of people would chime in saying it was fantastic. wow, i think my band has recorded better material and we suck!

Hey, Daryn, I'm gonna post my own version of putting the rock back into indie rock, maybe you'll be able to get behind my version. On that note, though, since you seem the hardest to please around here - What are some of your favorite bands/songs? I've already got what songs I'm going to post chosen, but for the life of me, everything that gets posted up here seems to get shot down by you.

pearl jam
audioslave
nine inch nails

any good rock music

i'm just giving this stuff a serious listen and it just sounds like all noise, no better than i could hear going to see some no name live band for $5 who are trying to make it big

i think part of the reason i shoot this stuff down is because i honestly can't believe that people say things like, WOW THEY R THE BEST OMG! THAT IS MY FAV SONG OF ALL TYME! and i am like.. wow what a bad song

The Hold Steady -Barfruit Blues (http://rapidshare.de/files/8586614/03_-_Barfruit_Blues.mp3.html)

Sons & Daughters - Johnny Cash (http://rapidshare.de/files/8584582/03_-_Johnny_Cash.mp3.html)

Hot Snakes - Suicide Invoice (http://rapidshare.de/files/8586494/05_-_Suicide_Invoice.mp3.html)

Let me know if you like any of these songs. Even if you don't, tell me which you one who disliked least or something.

EDIT: In regards to your edit, I agree that some of these guys put the fanaticism in fan, but sometimes a song is worth getting behind. In regards to your dislike of The Rat, it's a fantastic pop song, but it's not the best song EVAR!! or anything.

All that said, I don't know how many Built to Spill songs you've heard, but if you've heard more than 5 and you can't get behind them, I'd be surprised.

ok i am listening to these now,..

listened to this hot snakes - suicide invoice first, it's not bad, just seems like there is no decent hook.

next up is this hold steady, barfruit blues.. i am close to hating it. the guy is just talking annoyingly, not singing really. this will probably be my most hated

lastly johnny cash, sounds dece to start, i like the travelling beat. i don't much like this guy's voice. i guess it just feels like there is no emotion in it. i just hit the chorus and it's annoying.

yeah barfruit was prob the worst of them.

i am really trying to be open! i know it just appears that i am hating everything, but i'm being honest
