Hi All,

If you have read any of my previous posts, I am taking a break from Poker as got bored of cash games, and am quite enjoying the break.

Anyway just moved into a flat with my girlfriend which has Sky and have seen highlights of the WSOP 2005. She says why don't I enter that, I told her that entrance is $10,000 and I would get knocked out in the 1st day, but she has faith, and so told me to start playing these MTT games and try and get an automatic qualification place through these online tournaments. I have played about 20 of these in the past in total. Best was 16th in a +1000 field, but to be honest, don't really play like the pro's. Just play extremely tight, and hope to get good cards so usually never going to win a tournament.( eg don't raise middle low PP, just limp in, etc and will fold if I don't hit my PP on the flop with overcards) I know this is C%ap play, so need to improve!

Could you recommend what the best books for these MTT.

I don't want to disappoint her in the next WSOP tournament ;-)

Many thanks

Read Phil Hellmuth's "Play Poker Like the Pros" and I'll see you next year at the ME.

Sounds like you need "Kill Phil". It's the perfect book for someone who plays the 'old school' game that you describe.

For the love of good get Harringtons books

Vol 1 will teach you how to play poker, which you might not need, but its a good solid book from cover to cover

Vol 2 is all about having balls of steel !! (Great book !!)

It's the greatest literary work that mankind has ever produced.(At least in relation to no limit hold em tourneys) /images/graemlins/grin.gif

I own it, but I play almost exclusively limit hold'em ring games. I've read portions of it, but not the whole thing. I like how he walks you through the process of analyzing the situation, stacks, players, hand, etc. It seems like it'll be a great book when I get around to it. I'm too busy working on my limit game right now.

Thanks guys, will defintely get Harrington No. 2, but do I really need No. 1??. I primarily play cash games NL and so have got a good experince already. Can anyone sell it to me.....not literally but what does it have that would be extremely useful. Thanks for your quick replies,

You might not need vol 1, bit if the price does hurt you in any way, I would buy it. It is one of the best books on NL hold'em (Since play in the early stages does not differ much from cash games, it is good for that as well)

It is a well structured book with good explanation and lot of problems .. Harrington talks you through tons of real hands played live and online

It is worth it ... :-)

Get Volume I.

Even if you think you know everything which you need to know about NL poker.

The cost of the book is such a small investment compared to your future gains. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Also consider getting Pot limit and No limit Poker by Ciaffone and Reuben, which is very good as well.

Harrington is a better player than you,...and his book will improve your game to a higher level than where it is now.

If you think that your current NL game is 'good enough' than you're probably wrong.

Also, don't let your GF dictate what games you shold play.
MTT's are obviously pretty high variance and you should tread lightly...as opposed to just diving in and going full-forced to trying to win your way to the WSOP.
You could be in for a big disappointment when you spend a ton and still don't make it.

Tournament Poker for Advanced Players by David Skalansky

The first time you read it you'll feel like you got nothing out of it (since it is not directed specifically at NL tournaments), but upon further inspection/thought you will realize that you can apply these concepts to any type of tournament.

Whilst I dont think this book really improved my poker, it did help me a lot in certain tournament situations, e.g. satellite play. Get this book and both Harrington books!

Hi All, thanks for your advice.

I have already ordered both the harrington books, and will order howards post xmas.

Thanks for some peoples concerns. Don't worry I am not going to go mad, and enter every MTT and expect to get a seat! I am going to plays lots of MTT and Live games, but only once I have read and understood the book, and secondly it will be for smallish stakes $10-$30.until i am confortable with my play, and have shown potential that I can reach a final table. I recon I can't make it to the 2006 WSOP but the 2007! Well If my knowledge keeps increasing as it has in the last week, then I will be champ! Easy!! /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks for your advice.

At least this girl has her priorties straight!
All of the suggested books are great. I just read Phil Gordon's Little Green Book and it was great.
I got his DVD Final Table Poker (http://www.expertinsight.com) and it's the best I've seen. It recreates a WPT final table and you listen to Phil's thoughts as he plays each hand. It has really helped my game. He also mentions making notes on the players you are facing that day if you have info on them.
People on this forum also told me to get Caro's DVDs and his book of tells.
Next year the main event should be over 8000 people or so, I've heard. Going to need a lot of luck too.

If you're serious about this girl, what you need is a pre-nup, not a book! /images/graemlins/wink.gif

If you really think she's the one, win the tournament!

I recommend that if she wants a WSOP champion to take her to dinner that she might look up one of the past winners and see if they are available.

I can't believe nobody else has given you props on having multiple girlfriends who seem to be cool with it and all want you to win the WSOP! Attaboy!
