Inspired by this thread. (http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/showthreaded.php?Cat=0&Number=4083317)

Post either your favorite song lyrics or lyrics that describe how you're feeling now. A whole song or one line; it doesn't matter. I think it's more interesting not to post the artist, but do what you want.

THE SONG DOESN'T HAVE TO BE GOOD, JUST THE LYRICS.

One day I will work with animals
All the tests I'm gonna do
All my stuff's completely natural
And when we're done we'll boil 'em
down for glue
that we can use to re-adhere
your lips to mine if you were here

There's a lot I will never do
Some fantastic, I know it's true
But none as much as my want to be with you

I can't stand to wait in line long
So I built a new machine
It just measures up the distance
and then eliminates the folks between

One day I'll construct a satellite
and I'll name it after you
'Cause you were the greatest friend of all
except for when you split my lip in two
To see the look upon your face
as I launch you into space

There's a lot I will never do
Some fantastic, I know it's true
But none as much as my want to be with you

Bye-bye self-respect
I haven't had much of it since you left
I missed out on the best of you

Some day I will find the secret
to your social chemistry
Then I'll print it on a t-shirt
and it'll make you want to be with me
If I wear it past your work
you'll see other guys are jerks
Much like pheromones for flies
you will not avoid my eyes

There's a lot I will never do
Some fantastic, I know it's true
But none as much as my want to be with you

Bye-bye self-respect
I haven't had much of it since you left
I missed out on the best of you

From Style Council - Paris Match

"Empty skies say try to forget
Better advice is to have no regrets"

and

"Empty nights with nothing to do
I sit and think, every thought is for you,
I get so restless and bored
So i go out once more,
I hate to feel so confined
I feel like i'm wasting my time"

Man, I used to listen to this, and just have to go out and just walk and walk and walk through the wet, dark, empty streets of East London...

I'm in a lonely room
Hank Williams sings a lovesick blues
Winter's walking up the avenue
I ain't seen the sunshine since the 6th of June
But I'll tell ya this,
Don't call the Doctor, I'm gonna get better
Don't run for the priest, I'm gonna find some faith
Just because I burned my Bible, baby
It don't mean I'm too sick to pray

I'm in a crowded place
But I can't recognize a single face
They say the thrill is in the chase
But I ain't got the legs, ain't got the legs to run that race
But I'll tell you this
Don't call the doctor, I'm gonna get better
Don't run for the priest, I'm gonna find some faith
Just because I burned my bible, baby
It don't mean I'm too sick to pray
Better tell the children

They say I made my money messing up young minds
I stripped the congregation and left them all crying in the rain
Yeah I left them with their pain
Exit your boy with his ill-gotten gains

Well the blood runs deep and the blood runs cold
As the knife slits so another sucker is born
Thrown into this world alone
The doctor came knocking, wasn't nobody home

Ease the pain

Don't call the doctor, I'm gonna get better
Don't run for the priest, I'm gonna find some faith
Just because I burned my Bible, baby
It don't mean I'm too sick to pray
I'm too sick to pray

I've always thought the greatest juxtaposition in pop song lyrics is in Simon and Garfunkel's "Mrs. Robinson".

"Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio? / A nation turns its lonely eyes to you."

Those lines always seemed so full of meaning to me, conveying this idea of Joe DiMaggio as this cultural icon of yesteryear, representing strength, success, and a simpler America, and this idea of the loss of American innocence in the sixties, leaving a sobered nation with "lonely eyes" looking wistfully back, pleading for a hero or a unifying good to light them through a dark time.

This line is then immediately followed by "woo woo woo."

I'm sick right now and my head is pounding. I may puke on my office floor. That's why this is running ceaselessly through my skull...

He's back and he's got a new trick.
Magical Trevor is ten times as slick

as the last time, and the last time you saw him.
Now you can see why we really adore him!

You might think his new trick is sick:
Sawing a pigeon in half with a stick.
Look at the pigeon, now it's in two.
Oh my-- its rear end is having a poo.

Look at the mess--
in aisle two.
Aisle two, that's the place where we saw the Ragu!
There's so much Ragu...
He's baaack, etc...

Not a lot of songs more powerful than this:

Come you masters of war
You that build all the guns
You that build the death planes
You that build all the bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks.

You that never done nothin'
But build to destroy
You play with my world
Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly.

Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain.

You fasten all the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
You hide in your mansion'
As young people's blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud.

You've thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled
Fear to bring children
Into the world
For threatening my baby
Unborn and unnamed
You ain't worth the blood
That runs in your veins.

How much do I know
To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
Though I'm younger than you
That even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do.

Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul.

And I hope that you die
And your death'll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand over your grave
'Til I'm sure that you're dead.

Truth is, I thought it mattered. I thought that music mattered. But does it? Bollocks! Not compared to how people matter...
We'll be singing when we're winning
We'll be singing
I get knocked down but I get up again
You're never gonna keep me down
(Repeat)
Pissing the night away
Pissing the night away
He drinks a whiskey drink
He drinks a vodka drink
He drinks a lager drink
He drinks a cider drink
He sings the songs that remind him of the good times
He sings the songs that remind him of the better times
Oh, Danny Boy, Danny Boy, Danny Boy
I get knocked down but I get up again
You're never gonna keep me down
(Repeat)
Pissing the night away
Pissing the night away
He drinks a whiskey drink
He drinks a vodka drink
He drinks a lager drink
He drinks a cider drink
He sings the songs that remind him of the good times
He sings the songs that remind him of the better times
Don't cry for me, next door neighbor
I get knocked down but I get up again
You're never gonna keep me down
(Repeat)

I heard this this morning and it just struck me...

[ QUOTE ]
And them that don't know him won't like him.

And them that do sometimes won't know how to take him.

He ain't wrong he's just different,

but his pride won't let him do things to make you see he's right.

Just for sheer audacity, this is my favourite: "Eberneezer Goode" by the Shamen. Not sure whether ths made it to the US, but it's a song which despite its none-too-subtle glorification of ecstasy ("E's are good"), managed not to get censored and was number 1 in the charts for 4 weeks.

A great philosopher once wrote
Naughty, naughty, very naughty
Ha ha ha ha ha

There's a guy in the place
He's got a bittersweet face
And he goes by the name of Ebeneezer Goode
His friends call him Eezer and he is the main geezer
And he'll vibe about the place like no other man could
He's refined, he's sublime, he makes you feel fine
Though very much maligned and misunderstood
But if you know Eezer he's a real crowd pleaser
He's ever so good, he's Ebeneezer Goode
You can see that he's mischievious, mysterious and devious
When he circulates amongst the people in the place
But once you know he's fun and something of a genius
He gives a grin that goes around from face to face to face
Backwards and then forwards, forwards and then backwards
Eezer is the geezer who loves to muscle in
That's about the time the crowd all shout the name of Eezer
As he's kotcheled in the corner, laughing by the bass bin

Eezer Goode, Eezer Goode
He's Ebeneezer Goode
Eezer Goode, Eezer Goode
He's Ebeneezer Goode
Eezer Goode, Eezer Goode
He's Ebeneezer Goode
Eezer Goode, Eezer Goode
He's Ebeneezer Goode
He's Ebeneezer Goode

Has anybody got any veras
Lovely
Ha ha ha ha ha
Ha ha ha ha ha

A great philosopher once wrote
Naughty, naughty, very naughty
Ha ha ha ha ha

Ebeneezer Goode, leading light of the scene
Know what I mean, see
He created the vibe
He takes you for a ride and as if by design
The party ignites like he's comin alive
He takes you to the top, shakes you all around
Then back down, you know as he gets mellow
Then as smooth as the groove that is making you move
He glides into your mind with a sunny Hello
A gentleman of leisure, he's there for your pleasure
But go easy on old Eezer he's the love you could lose
Extraordinary fellow, like Mr. Punchinello
He's the kind of geezer who must never be abused
When you're in town and Ebeneezer is around
You can sense a presence in the sound of the crowd
He gets them all at it, the party starts rocking
The people get excited it's time to shout loud

Eezer Goode, Eezer Goode
He's Ebeneezer Goode
Eezer Goode, Eezer Goode
He's Ebeneezer Goode
Eezer Goode, Eezer Goode
He's Ebeneezer Goode
Eezer Goode, Eezer Goode
He's Ebeneezer Goode

He's Ebeneezer Goode
He's Ebeneezer Goode
Eezer Goode, Eezer Goode
Eezer Goode, Eezer Goode
He's Ebeneezer Goode

Got any salmon Sorted
Ha ha ha ha ha
Ha ha ha ha ha
Eezer Goode, Eezer Goode
Eezer Goode, Eezer Goode
Oh what a carry on, ha ha ha ha ha
Eezer Goode, Eezer Goode
Wicked
Eezer Goode, Eezer Goode
He's Ebeneezer Goode

He's Ebeneezer Goode
Oh what a carry on, ha ha ha ha ha
He's Ebeneezer Goode
Eezer Goode, Eezer Goode
Wicked
Eezer Goode, Eezer Goode
He's Ebeneezer Goode
He's Ebeneezer Goode
He's Ebeneezer Goode
Eezer Goode, Eezer Goode

A song about how I'm feeling right now...

Kathleen Edwards - Away

========================================

I remember the way
Driving home late
Speeding all the way
alone in the rain
I was rehearsing a part
from down at the bar
My mouth smelled like a drink
we were laughing, I think
I've been away.

Do you pick up your phone?
Do you check your mail
Do you answer your door
even if it's late
I don't know who to call
I don't know who to write
and I think I forgot
what your face looks like
I've been away

Do you think that I've changed
I swear I never tried
Memory's a terrible thing
When you use it right
I was rehearsing a part
From down at the bar
My mouth smelled like a drink
We were laughing, I think
I've been away...
