Villain is in his first orbit at the table so no reads. Should I have bet-called this river? My plan was to check-call

You clearly missed value, but I don't think it's all [i]that[/] bad. You'll pick up a bluff from a flush draw on occasion and a smaller ace may still bet. There are plenty of 10/20 regulars who bet here more than they call.

Not after this postflop action. I think checking is very bad. Or pretty much any possible postflop action on a board like this
