I want to take a shot at a 20-40 game for the first time.
What is the best buy in for this situation?? I was thinking about buying in for the minimum $200.00 and if I lose that the session is over.
Is that a good idea?

best time is just after winning in a smaller stakes game. then you will feel less intimidated by the money and pressure. pick a weak game for your first one and buy in for about 15 big bets or what you won earlier. quit when out of touch or after losing 2/3 or so of your stack.

No. A decent buy-in for 20-40 would be something like 700-1,000 buy-in for 20-40. I could be wrong but I mainly play 10-20 and I usually buy-in 400-500 for 10-20.

What is wrong with buying in for the minimum and quitting the game if you lose that?
I normally play 6-12, buy in for 1 rack so 200 is a lot of money to me, and this would be a huge jump.
The way I look at it if things go bad 200 is the maximum I could possibly lose. If I get down to a tiny stack, go all in and take a really bad beat I lose a lot less than If I were playing a bigger stack.

One problem in buying in for $200 is the others will think you're playing scared money and take shots at you. Especially if they know you to be a 6-12 player.

If $200 is a lot of money to you, stick to the smaller game.

I don't recommend this. As Andy said, if 200$ is a big deal to you you won't be able to play anything but "scared". Furthermore, even a significant win this time won't change anything. You'll win some coin but you won't have nearly enough to move up in limits. You'll have beaten the game but only once, in a meaningless short term result.

Personally whenever I see a player buy in short like this he invariably gets attacked, ie blinds get raised every time, etc. The other players know you are waiting for that one particular hand to invest in, almost trying to "double up" like you would in a NL game, and that you aren't going to touch marginal hands. This is bad for you. Also, many times 200$ is good for ONE HAND at 20/40. If you lose said hand, you're done.

I strongly recommend against this. If you really want to take a shot, get to the point in your bankroll where you can lose 1000$ or so comfortably. Then you can buy in right and hopefully play your A game.

In need,
Why go straight to 20/40 - why not take a crack at 10/20 first.

One of the best ways to lose money is to move up without a sufficient bank roll. Trust me on this - it's the way I go on tilt - after my AA have been cracked by a random two pair off suit hand too many times - I say - if only i played at a higher limit this would not happen - it does.

Also - if you are playing 6/12 and $200 is a lot of money for you - you might want to re-think your limits.
You can easily lose 20BB at almost all games - A bad run at 6/12 could see you down a lot more than $200 bucks.

Do you have at least 200BB for 6/12 - if not you might want to step down a level and build up that bank roll.

No offense, but if $200 is a lot of money to you, 6/12 is probably too high. To my mind, $200 is a small buy-in for a 6/12 game. I prefer sitting down with 25 big bets in front of me. That way, I can handle some initial swings without feeling short-stacked.

no

are you playing craps? this doesnt even cover one big hand. you could get blown out in the first 5 hands.

be prepared to buy in for at least 25BB if youre going to make an honest go of it. at least give yourself a chance to catch some cards.

but then again, if your goal is to just be able to say you played 20-40 go ahead.

if $200 is alot of money to you, you maybe shouldnt be playing in a 6-12 game.

You'll have 10% of your money in the BB with $200.

If you like that feeling I suggest the supersatellites at the WSOP.
