What stereotypes are associated with Will in this show?

In the opening scene Will is in the inner-city playing basketball and getting into trouble. He's not civilized like his rich Bel-Air family. Hiss language is ghetto. He's unable to assimilate at the country club. Dress is not proper.

What obvious ones am I missing?

This is far and away the most important stereotype from that show.

Happy holidays,

in one of the shows he is the star of the bel aire prep basketball team, even though he obviously sucks based on the opening credits.

Uh...its not a stereotype. The premise of the show that an city kid who is a trouble maker, moves to the rich suburbs with his family?? If anything it portrays the family as the opposite of a stereotypical tv black family...i mean cmon look at carlton.

When his mom is shown in the opening credits, she is an old bag with big glasses and her hair in rollers. When she is in the show, she looks completely differnt.

The butler's manner of speech.

EDIT: Just saw you only wanted steroetypes with Will Smith's character. Oh well.

Not really a stereotype, but he manages to date only black girls at his mostly white school.

I guess its more of an indication of what the producers thought the audience would tolerate.

Will Smith came to my high school and I saw him play ball. He most certainly does not suck.

Edited to say: Ok, in case this wasn't clear, I was not being serious

Sounds like a BORING assignment. You could make it passably interesting to argue that the Bel Air relatives are sterotypical WASPS.

All the white kids worship the hip black guy.

isn't there a scene in the pilot where uncle phil tells him that he used to follow Malcolm X around, but now he's all WASP-y and boring? seems like following that transformation might be worth your time.

although, in reality he did what most hippies and radicals did: he grew up and sold out. Jerry Rubin became a stockbroker. So it goes.

Isn't there a bunch of graffiti in the opening scene also?

11-30-2005, 05:21 PM
Yes, it is when he is spraying graffitti in the beginning and the police comes up. He wasn't spraying it with a white friend. The stereotype is that only blacks would do such a thing

Awesome thread, gentlemen.
That show is hilarious.

Jazzy Jeff always gets tossed from the front of the mansion.

I think it was the same mom from his "Parents Just Don't Understand" video. The style is done the same way as well.

You wanna talk about stereotypes? The Power Rangers. There's some stereotypes. The yellow ranger was the asian chick. The black ranger was the black dude who couldn't kick some ass without using some crazy dance move. They'd have him doing windmills to fight off the evil doers.

Anyway, great show.

The original Power Rangers or the Fresh Prince of Bel Air? Because I agree either way.

any true fan of the show would know that will's father did eventually appear, and then conveniently abandon will for the 2nd time, after building his hopes up.
