Pre-flop, Late position is always the button and one position to the right of the button. Middle position is always 2-4 positions to the right of the button. Early position is always 5-7 positions to the right of the button.

Thus, in a 7-handed or less game, there is no such thing as early position.

Artifice think of last couple of positions on the right of the dealer as late. Think of the first couple of positions on the left of the player under the gun as early. The rest are in the middle. In a three-handed game, the would be an early, middle and late player. As you play with various numbers of players at a table you will get a feel for it. In HPFAP position is defined for a ring game.

This is patently wrong. In a 3-handed game, there are two blinds and one late position player. If you played the button in a three handed game using S&M's starting hand requirements for EP, you'd get killed! EP can *only* exist in 10, 9, and 8 handed games. If the table is seven handed (or if 3 people are away from the table in a 10-handed game), the player to the left of the big blind is in *middle* position.
