A value bet is a bet that is made to extract value with a hand that you feel is superior. It is a bet that does not mind a call because you feel that you are ahead more often than not. If you are betting it is for one of 2 reasons: to bluff someone out, or to extract value from your hand. If you are not betting for one of those reasons then you should not be betting. I know this seems elementary but you would not believe the number of players who will bet the river with AQ on a K9762 rainbow type board where a bet will only be called if you are beaten and has no chance of pushing someone off of a worse hand.

There are more than these two reasons to raise.
