Funny that anacardo posted his Rock Goddess thread right before I finished this poll. Puny minds think alike...

On the basis of Rockness rather than Hotness...

I included Kim Shattuck because she has the most amazing rock and roll shriek I’ve ever head, even tho she isn’t a solo artist. Same with Lisa Kekaula.

Disqualifications:
Liz Phair since she doesn’t really rock and her last album was produced by the horrid Matrix.

Fiona Apple for not rocking so much and being boney.

Lita Ford for hating Joan Jett

Cub for being a whole band (same with Go-Gos, Girlschool, Smears, Red Aunts, Chubbies, etc…)

Karen O for being bizarre, though hott.

That chick from Evanescence for blowing donkey dix from the back with mayonnaise.

Aretha, other soul singers for being in a different (probably better) category.

Grace Slick for public fattitude.

Others for not making enough albums—Mia, Slits, Detroit Cobras, April March, so on.

Additions? Pix? Silly buggers? Enjoi.

Debbie Harry should probably be here, too. I voted for Chrissy Hynde.

Where's the "Women don't belong in good rock music" button?

you need to put an "other" option

what about alanis? I hate her but I would think she should be included.

Also, I don't like many women rockers period.

No Bonnie Raitt or Melissa Etheridge /images/graemlins/confused.gif

What about Dolores O'Riordan from the Cranberries?

gotta go with Janis on this one -

She was like Madonna 20 yrs. before - she's the queen of Rock and Roll -

The best of the lot was Pearl (a.k.a. Janis Joplin).

Current porkers who definately should have been included are Ann Wilson of Heart and Grace Slick (Airplane version). And Stevie Nicks had her moments.

do all these women come from a time period before 1990, or do they just suck enough that I don't know them? The only two recognizeable names are Joan Jett and Janis Joplin, and I am a fan of classic rock, so i presume the rest just sucked enough to be forgotten by history.

More disqualified honeys:

Ann Wilson: too many pisspoor 80s records...
Stevie Nicks: Scarves
Dolores O'Riordan: though Irish, doesn't rock...only one OK album
Melissa Etheridge: only rocks if you are an overweight lesbian.
Bonnie Raitt: Blues, not r&r (and wack middle aged blues as well)
Alanis: Canadia
Debbie Harry: Heart of Glass sellout moment
Women Don't Belong In Rock: YSSCKY /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

This poll sucks hard.

Where's Kim Deal?
Exene Cervenka?
Courtney Love?
Kim Gordon?

I could go on.

Fair enough. We better never see the Stones or Bowie or Rod Stewart or anything like that in any future "Best Male/Group Rockers" thread that you start, then.

I voted for Joan Jett. Dunno why, but I have always had a thing for her.

And yes, I know that she is lesbo, but I have an injection that might cure that disease.

I did not know that. I am not sure how I feel about this.

never have understood the appeal of that horrid Joplin screech. she sounds like two cats fighting in a bag over who gets to bang a third one.

joan jett was ok, but still kind of a gimmick - always seemd like she was "playing" at being a rocker.

Chrissy Hynde always did and always will rock.

Lisa K. might be good but no one knows who the fu*k the Bellrays are.

You're missing the lead singers from L7, Babes in Toyland and Wendy O. Williams.

******

PJ Harvey wins this contest, if not this poll, hands down.

Good points...
I was going for Best Overall Artist, so--
Kim Gordon: not that individually creative...plus her songs are the weakest SY songs...
Exene C: X is my god but Doe wrote most of the songs. Plus her solo attempts failed...
C.Love: Well, I hate Hole and her, but I can see the argument...she does rock, plus I touched her boob in 1994...
Kim Deal: Oops. I overlooked her because of not having a real solo career, but that's dumb-- The Amps are amazing.
Sorry...

Sheryl Crow

this is a major oversight in the poll. im sick of her public image of late. in fact i dont listen to much of her new albums but i still listen to all her old albums. that chic can play the guitar.

putting courtney love in the category w/ those women in an insult to the others. are you kidding me? since kurdt and billy corgain stopped writing her albums she finally revealed herself as the no talent ass clown that she is. i can not stand that woman.

Sheryl is OK, but she does not Rock.
Wendy O. Williams is too scary to Rock.
L7, Babes in Toyland are group efforts.

My personal vote is for PJ. Janis and Joan are great performers, but not as musically gifted as She. She is an auteur who keeps changing and refining her style and songwriting direction, all while rocking the stage like a freakin banshee.

Gwen Stefani does not rock, Hollaback is her greatest achievement tho'...

I'm not saying I'd vote for her, but I was surprised not to see Gwen Stefani in the poll. Ok, maybe not with the B-A-N-A-N-A-S song, but No Doubt is ok.
