I'm gonna be in Maui for about a week and 1/2. Are there any cardrooms or casinos there that have Texas Hold 'em. Is it even legal there any way? If they do have it, which islands have it?

Man... you're going to Hawaii and you want to sit inside and play poker?

Just wanted to play a few nights if I could, I'll be surfing most of the time while I'm there.

im going there for the first time in august as well. ive never been, but from what i understand (and ive researched it a little), there's nothing but home games and the internet. no cardrooms, no legal poker.

There is no legalized gambling of any sort in Hawaii. Not even a state lottery.

Not a fun thing to do there but play golf.

If you find yourself in Hawaii craving a poker game and you've been there for less than, say, a month, well, you may want to check into Gamblers Anonymous.

Golf, Snorkeling, Surfing, Scuba Diving, Mountain Climbing. On the Big Island, you can drive up to the observatory and throw snowballs and then back down to the beach and go snorkeling. Big game fishing (I've got a cousin who's a fishing captain in Kona if you need a contact).

Sitting under a palm tree reading Hemmingway while the surf crashes in front of you.

Believe me, you'll be okay.

The only sports I play are golf and racquetball. Since I don't need to go to Hawaii to enjoy those, I'll probably never go.

Are there any good archeological sites or ruins on Hawaii? Any world class museums of antiquities? Now that would be fun. However, since I've never really heard of any, I'm sure I'm better off going to any of hundreds of other places in the world for that kind of entertainment.

I know I'm in the minority, but from my perspective, Hawaii realy sucks.

racquetball! theyve been showing this old squash tournament they held in NY or somewhere on the tennis channel (one of the only stations i like) recently and it's just amazing. there's just gotta be applications from that for heads up poker.

as for hawaii sucking, ill post a trip report when i get back in august.

Well, the Brady Bunch found a pretty good one.

Squash is great fun. There is a very large mental / strategic aspect to the game, much more so than tennis or even racquetteball. Tennis channel? When did that start airing? What cable system carries it?

"Tennis channel? When did that start airing? What cable system carries it?'

we have cox cable here in san diego. im sure yuo can request from direct tv or whoever you use and pay like $1 a month. now be warned is it not all the name is cracked up to be, it's basically a lot of old matches (dating from 1-30 years ago) some old instructional segments, some amazingly lo-res 1/2 hours of what basically amounts to some kids demo tape in search of sponsors, and things like that. but where else can you watch an old bjorn borg match, r a squash tournament from 2000, or fed cup quarterfinals from 1999. it's pretty great when you see it that way.

Mike - We go to Hawaii almost once a year - it is always a family trip (when I go to play poker I don't take the family usually). We have a timeshare in Maui. I've been to all the islands including Molokai believe it or not. Let me know if you want any info on golf and restaurants which is mostly what I do /forums/images/icons/smile.gif .

Tons. Check out this link to the Bishop Museum in Honolulu (not a WC museum, but interesting, nonetheless) for some info on their collection of ancient Hawaiian artifacts.

The study of the Hawaiians has been of great antrological import because of their link in the process that populated the pacific basin.
Additionally, all of the islands have ruins and remains in various states of discovery.
Also, I think that every American should go/want to go to the Pearl Harbor memorial. I hadn't been since grade school, but, when I went a few years ago with my wife, I was stunned at the emotions that I felt as i looked down into the water.

I was stationed there for a couple of years and all forms of gambeling a illegal. every year it comes up on the ballot but is quickly and strongly opposed. Take a break from the card table and go surfing.

Um, actually, yeah. There are tons of carvings, runes, etc., left from the original settlers (who came over from the Marquesa Islands). It's one of the few places in the country (outside the Southwest) where you can wander around in the right places and just randomly come across rock paintings and other signs of the earlier civilization.

I don't know about world-class museums of antiquities - they'd be in Honolulu, and I pretty much avoid it.

But there's some pretty deep cultural stuff there when you get past the Polynesian Luau stuff (and you're right about that - you do not need to fly 6000 miles to experience it).

I didn't do a whole lot in Hawaii (we stayed in Maui the whole time) that was very exciting, I had to stay with my dad and step mom. The 1st 2 days we were they we just stayed at the beach by the hotel and I almost broke my neck by trying to do flips off a boogie board in 2 feet of water.

The 3rd day that we were there we went riding on ATV's on one of the mountains (can't remember the name). It was alot bumpier than I thought it would be and wasn't very much fun.

The rest of the time I was there (4 more days) I surfed the entire time. (I surfed at one of the parks about 2-3 miles south of Lahaina) I rented a 6'4" board which is much shorter than the average board the locals use. When I go surfing in Florida every on uses a short board, in Maui every one was using a long board. The waves were good, shoulder high to head high and got my self plenty of sunburn. I'll be practically black after I goto the Bahamas for a week in a week.
